After Raising $114,000 on Kickstarter, Dev Goes Silent

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 18 Februari 2015 | 23.37

The Stomping Land, a planned multiplayer dinosaur-survival game that raised $114,000 on Kickstarter, is now in a critical state with its art lead quitting and its creator not responding to emails.

In June 2013, The Stomping Land Kickstarter project managed to raise more than $114,000 from 4,400 backers, having initially only asked for $20,000.

A year later, a first build of the project was published on Steam Early Access, and at the time its lead developer--Alex Fundora--assured that "even though the game is available, development is still in full force."

However, this would mark he final update on the game's Kickstarter page. Now, the game's lead artist has quit the project and says he hasn't been able to establish contact with Fundora in weeks.

In-game model designer, Vlad Konstantino, wrote on The Stomping Land forums: "More than a month has passed since the day when I received the last reply from Fundora. I've sent him five messages and haven't got any single reply."

Konstantino also claimed that Fundora owes him money, and that "if this silence continues I will stop my participation in TSL and start taking the necessary measures to cover my expenses."

The message, first brought to light by PC Gamer, adds that Konstantino is now working on a different project entirely.

One backer, who said they had invested $90 in The Stomping Land, has informed Kickstarter of the issue, but the crowd-funding site could only offer an apology in return.

It is not clear if Kickstarter can or will take any further action.

Leaked Gold Mario Amiibo Appears to Be Walmart-Exclusive

Nintendo will release a gold Mario Amiibo later this year alongside Wii U party game Mario Party 10, according to a leaked posted from retailer Walmart that appeared on Reddit.

"Make this Easter golden!" reads a line from the poster, which specifically mentions that the gold Mario Amiibo will be sold "only at Walmart."

Mario Party 10 launches March 20, while Easter this year is Sunday, April 5.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a special-edition Mario Amiibo variant. In fact, gold and silver Mario Amiibo were spotted on Nintendo's own website earlier this month.

It's not uncommon for retailers to snag exclusives for Amiibo toys. After all, Shulk is exclusive to GameStop, Meta Knight can only be purchased at Best Buy, and Lucario is only available at Toys 'R Us.

Earlier this week, Nintendo revealed the worldwide best-selling Amiibo toys and more.

World of Tanks Coming to Xbox One With Cross-Platform Support

Free-to-play tank-battling game World of Tanks is coming to Xbox One. Developer Wargaming announced the news Wednesday in a post on its website, also noting that the Xbox 360 edition of the game has now crossed 5 million downloads to date.

World of Tanks on Xbox One will support cross-platform play, meaning Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamers will play on the same virtual battlefields. Gameplay is the same across console generations, but Wargaming explains that World of Tanks will look better on Xbox One.

In addition, all progress from the Xbox 360 version of World of Tanks--including vehicles, experience, and credits--will carry forward to the Xbox One edition. This is made possible due to the fact that progress is stored and saved to your Xbox Live account.

Wargaming also explains that gamers who want to go back and forth between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One version of the game can do so, and their progress will remain intact.

World of Tanks will be released for Xbox One sometime in 2015. The game is also currently available on PC. Some screenshots of the Xbox One edition are available below.

Game Returns to Steam After Dev Threatens Gabe Newell

Paranautical Activity, the roguelike FPS that was removed from Steam after one of its developers publicly threatened to "kill" Gabe Newell, has reappeared on the PC games platform.

A special "Atonement Edition" emerged on Steam after its developer, Code Avarice, sold the IP to publisher Digerati.

Back in October, an embarrassing flurry of emotional decisions led the Code Avarice developer Mike Maulbeck to claim that Steam "is the most incompetent piece of fucking shit". He made this remark, along with a string of others, moments after his game was published on Steam.

"Fucking Steam is just fucking taking money out of my pocket. Misinforming people that my game is in fucking early access," he complained.

"I am going to kill Gabe Newell. He is going to die," he added.

Shortly afterwards, the game disappeared from Steam, and Maulbeck resigned from his position at Code Avarice and, at the time, suggested he may not return to games again.

Maulbeck said at the time he had sold his half of the company to another employee, and has given up all his rights and ownership of the studio's intellectual properties, meaning he had closed off all routes of income from the studio.

But about a month later he returned to the studio. Code Avarice wrote on its website: "This is probably not hugely surprising to some of you, but Mike couldn't commit to his decision to leave Code Avarice. [Co-founder Travis Pfenning] publicly denounced his departure, and in the weeks following his official stepping down Mike had second thoughts."

This wasn't the final chapter in the saga, however, as it emerged on Valentines Day that the game--called Paranautical Activity--had returned to Steam, with the suffix "Deluxe Atonement Edition".

According to Maulbeck's Twitter feed, he is now looking for a job elsewhere.

Minecraft Creator Discusses Sale to Microsoft, "Sellout" Criticism

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has spoken out regarding last year's unexpected blockbuster deal that saw Persson sell developer Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.

Hypothetically asked by a fan if he thought he was a "sellout" for agreeing to the deal, Persson replied: "I kinda feel like I am, but I still feel like I made the right choice. I guess some things always come at a cost."

The fan who asked the question said he didn't really see it that way. Persson was in a way stuck between a rock and a hard place, he suggested. If he sold Minecraft, critics would say he's a sellout; if he didn't, some might see him as a one-trick pony.

Persson said: "The one-trick pony thing was hard to deal with. Matching the insane success of Minecraft would be impossible. I'm OK with it now."

He's now spending some of his time prototyping new games that he doesn't intend to ever show or release publicly. "The fun is back! Programming is annoying and frustrating, but SO MUCH FUN," he said, explaining that these projects--if they are ever released--aren't intended to match the success of Minecraft.

Persson was believed to have a 70 percent stake in Mojang, meaning he made somewhere in the area of $1.75 billion from the sale to Microsoft. He has since left Mojang and purchased a $70 million mega-mansion in Beverly Hills.

Zelda-Like Adventure Game Oceanhorn Hits Steam Next Month

Oceanhorn, a Zelda-like adventure game originally released for iOS devices last year, is coming to PC through Steam on March 17, developer Cornfox & Brothers have announced.

The PC edition of the game is described as a "completely remastered version," featuring a major graphical and technical overhaul that should make it more suitable for bigger screens and more powerful hardware.

"All of the game's graphical assets have been tweaked for the PC platform," its developer writes. "We added four times more polygons, sharper textures, normal maps, detail objects, and new lighting effects such as dynamic ambient occlusion, soft shadows, and realtime reflections to make Oceanhorn look stunning when played in 4K resolution."

What's more, its developer explains that Oceanhorn has been "redesigned" for physical controls; it supports both keyboard & mouse and gamepad. In addition, the game's puzzles have been re-tooled and areas of the game that felt confusing or unfair have been redesigned.

The PC edition of Oceanhorn costs $15, while the iOS version sells for $9.

Another Resistance Game Going Offline

Sony will discontinue online support for 2009 PSP game Resistance Retribution in May, the company announced on Twitter. All online services for the game, including its eight-player multiplayer mode, will no longer work as of May 15, 2015. "Thanks for playing!" Sony wrote.

Retribution won't be the first Resistance game to lose its online support. Last year, Sony discontinued online play for three PlayStation 3 Resistance games: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3.

After May, the only Resistance game to still offer online play will be 2012 PlayStation Vita game Resistance: Burning Skies, which is the most recent entry in the series.

No new Resistances games have been announced. Series creator Insomniac Games recently said it seriously considered making a fourth Resistance game, but was wary of franchise fatigue. The developer instead made Xbox One game Sunset Overdrive.

Evolve Launches With $136+ Worth of DLC

Launch-day DLC is no new thing. Personalization packs such as character and weapon skins are par for the course with many games today. But while some games offer just a few extra options at launch, expanding later, Turtle Rock's new title Evolve gives players a veritable feast of add-on content to consume.

If you wanted to buy all of the Evolve DLC available right now it would cost you $136, on top of the $60 game or the $25 DLC pass. There are 44 pieces of Evolve add-on content listed on the game's Xbox Marketplace product page, available in the $2-$7 range.

The DLC is cosmetic in nature, however, limited to weapon and Monster skins. Some options include the Kraken Wendigo Skin ($3), the Assault Ragnarok Skin Pack ($5), and the Goliath Bog Skin ($3), among many others.

On top of the Monster and weapon skin packs, Turtle Rock offers the Evolve Hunting Season Pass ($25), which will eventually unlock four new Hunters and more. All new maps and modes, however, will be free, so as to not segregate the community.

That Evolve offers a smorgasbord of extra paid content is not all that surprising. After all, we've known for a while now that Turtle Rock had extensive DLC plans for the game, which some fans raised concerns about. Responding to these issues, key developers spoke out to make clear that Evolve's DLC scheme is not meant to "leech" money out of players.

Despite Turtle Rock attempting to lay those concerns to rest, the controversy over Evolve's DLC plans made it all the way to the top of 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive. Earlier this month, Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick defended Evolve's DLC plans, saying that in fact controversy can be a positive.

"I guess controversy, generally speaking, is a good thing," Zelnick said at the time. "People can argue about the business model [but] I think we're delivering a fantastic title that's well worth what consumers will pay for it."

Evolve's extensive DLC plans also give the game an opportunity to continue to drive revenue long after release, something Zelnick sees as being paramount to Take-Two's success. In previous earnings calls, Zelnick has talked about applying "recurrent consumer spending" strategies to most of its major franchises, Evolve being no exception. The idea of recurrent consumer spending is that major releases are complemented by an array of microtransactions that ideally yield further revenue for a game up until--and possibly beyond--the release of the next installment in the series.

In the case of Grand Theft Auto V, this is already paying off. While Take-Two has not yet announced specific numbers, Zelnick has said that GTA Online, the multiplayer mode for GTA V, has been "the gift that keeps on giving" as it relates to players continuing to spend money on the game long after its initial release. GTA Online allows players to buy in-game currency for real money, or they can always earn it through regular gameplay.

So not only does Take-Two make money from the 45 million copies of GTA V sold so far, but the company also banks incremental revenue from GTA Online. This is seen as a way to establish GTA as a "permanent" franchise, one that can be a meaningful revenue contributor even in years when no new GTA title is released. It's not hard to see Take-Two applying the same vision to Evolve and its other franchises, and the proof is in the numbers.

For Take-Two's latest quarter, revenue from digital items was big business for the company. Sales of things like virtual currency and DLC jumped 64 percent to $217 million during the period, the company reported last week. In all, recurrent consumer spending made up 36 percent of net revenue from digitally delivered content, representing a 23 percent year-over-year increase.

All of this is to say DLC is here to stay. While virtual items may be just that--virtual--the money to be made from them is definitely real.

Evolve - Ready or Not Live Action Exclusive Trailer

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 04 Februari 2015 | 23.37

I dont get why studios keep shovelling multiplayer games down our throats. I prefer single player campaigns or even local co-op to these "play with your friends" games.

When I play video games its to get away from my friends, its the ultimate form of escapism, where I don't have to engage with the outside world.

In anycase, I expect this game to be average at best, its certainly got a interesting premise, just as Destiny appeared to have, but I think this will just be another Destiny.

LEGO Jurassic World Teaser Trailer Stars a Broken T-Rex

A short teaser trailer for LEGO Jurassic World has gone live to mark the announcement that the adventure game will release in the summer across multiple platforms.

The CG video, shown above, marries the iconic roar of the original movie's T-Rex with the LEGO series' signature sense of humor. There is currently no video on how the game plays, though it will cover the events of the original Jurassic Park trilogy, as well as the new film, Jurassic World, that's due to hit cinemas on June 12.

LEGO Jurassic World is in development for all major games platforms; PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PlayStation Vita. The project itself is the result of a joint business venture between publisher Warner Bros, developer TT Games, licensor The LEGO Group, and film rights holder Universal Pictures.

Warner Bros has disclosed a brief outline of gameplay, writing that LEGO Jurassic World depicts famous scenes and action sequences from the films, as well as giving players the chance to play as dinosaurs. Gamers can also collect amber, which contains dinosaur DNA, and then create their own custom species.

Ultima Underworld Spiritual Successor in the Works

[UPDATE] The Kickstarter campaign for Underworld Ascendant, which is asking for $600,000, is now online. For more information and to contribute, head to the campaign page here.

The original story is below.

Classic PC role-playing series Ultima Underworld is making a comeback.

After announcing last summer that he had acquired the rights to make a new Underworld RPG, Paul Neurath and his Boston-based studio Otherside Entertainment today announced plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign for Underworld Ascendant on February 4.

A spiritual successor to 1993's Ultima Underworld II, Ascendant is being worked on by Neurath--who co-founded original Underworld studio Looking Glass, and a number of other veterans. The team has not yet disclosed a funding goal for the project.

Concept art for Ascendant

"When we completed Ultima Underworld II in 1993, I never imagined that this classic fantasy RPG franchise would go dark for the two decades," Neurath said.

"The Underworlds were arguably the first immersive first-person games. Not only were they the first to create a real-time 3D texture-mapped world, they also pioneered player-driven sandbox gameplay," he added. "They influenced a whole generation of games: Doom, Thief, Deus Ex, Skyrim, BioShock, and more. Today, leading game designers view the Underworlds as still astonishingly modern in design."

Neurath went on to say the classic Underworld games were "years ahead of their time" and "didn't fit into the established genres of that era." This is partly the cause of the series falling out of the spotlight, Neurath contends.

"Over the years I've tried without success to raise the Underworld series back up. Just now have the stars aligned so this can happen. I started OtherSide Entertainment an indie studio to rekindle this classic," he said.

About Ascendant, Neurath stressed that the game will "retain the distinctive fantasy RPG gameplay of the originals." At the same time, he made clear that the game will "push forward with new innovations."

Neurath went on to say that Otherside already has an early prototype of Ascendant running on PC. But the game won't happen without the help of fans, he said.

"This can only happen with your help. As an indie studio, we are looking to our fans to fund a significant portion of the development through our upcoming Kickstarter campaign, which begins on February 4," Neurath said. "We aren't shy about our ambitions to make a great game, but that takes serious resources and effort."

"Beyond funding, we are inviting you in on the making of Underworld Ascendant. Rarely have fans been able to participate in the often unpredictable, sometimes messy creative process that gives birth to innovative games. We hope you'll join us on this adventure!"

Rise of the Tomb Raider Will Depict a Traumatized Lara

Rise of the Tomb Raider will star a distraught Lara Croft one year after her perilous expedition across the Yamatai, now obsessed with immortality myths and venturing across the frozen wilds of Siberia for answers.

The new details were disclosed in the latest edition of Game Informer magazine, which describes the Crystal Dynamics-developed adventure as both a fight against the savagery of nature and Lara's internal battle with the trauma from her last game.

Storms, avalanches, wolves, and grizzly bears are just some of the natural hazards that players will encounter in the snow-blanketed region of Russia. According to Crystal Dynamics, the game will also take players though other distinct locations across the globe, with Game Informer citing "dusty sandscapes, dense forests, and underwater caverns".

"Lara feels like an outsider in the real world"
-- franchise director Noah Hughes

Rise of the Tomb Raider follows Lara one year after her fight for survival in Yamatai. Having discovered on that island what she believed was an immortal being, Lara is now in search of Kitezhm, a mythical city she believes can be found in Siberia, which could provide answers to her question.

"People think she's crazier than she is," said franchise creative director Noah Hughes.

"If you came back [from Yamatai] and started talking about an immortal being and a secret sun-worshipping cult, that's a tough pill to swallow. So Lara feels like an outsider in the real world. Her next expedition is a way of dealing with the trauma she's been through, but it's also a way of finding peace by chasing any shred of evidence that what she saw was real."

Players will have enhanced options for crafting new survival gear along the way. Plants, minerals, metals, clothes, hides, and other rare relics can be collected, though some preparation will be required to amass enough items for crafting.

"You might have a particular upgrade that requires an alpha wolf hide, but wolves only come out at certain times of the day," Hughes says, inferring to some form of day-night cycle within the game world.

The serious tone and sheer brutality of the previous game will also make a comeback here, he said, and the effects on Lara's psychology will be fairly well pronounced.

"Lara's learned a lot from the last game, but she doesn't have unflinching confidence. She can't face unlimited opponents unscathed. She's in a life-and-death situation, so we want to capture a certain amount of humanity by showing that Lara is continually challenged as a character. It's important for us to capture those moments where she is uncertain about her identity, her direction, or her ability to come out alive."

In the video above, Hughes also appeared to suggest that the game would lean on more of a Metroidvania style, with environmental puzzles to explore and overcome.

"We love that game structure, I think the most important thing to us is really to live up to that promise of tomb-raiding, and make sure that--as much as this is a game about traversal, exploration and combat--it's also very much about tombs and puzzle solving."

Crystal Dynamics also reveals in the Game Informer article that the Tomb Raider development team worked 18-hour days for about a year in order to finish the 2013 reboot on time. It adds that sales, including those of the Definitive Edition, now totals more than 7 million units.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a timed Xbox One and Xbox 360 exclusive, scheduled for release later this year, and published by Microsoft.

The Xbox 360 version will be developed by an external studio.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Review

It's hard not to compare The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D to Nintendo's other foray into handheld Zelda remakes, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Ocarina of Time's upgrades for the 3DS significantly improved the experience; artfully placed Sheikah Stones offered visions and showed where and how to solve the next puzzle, and the 3DS's gyroscope added motion controls to certain actions, such as shooting arrows. These additions were designed to make the game accessible to modern audiences and more palatable for short play sessions.

For 3DS, Majora's Mask was retooled to be friendlier in shorter player sessions, with great success. A more detailed quest log lets you keep track of every completed, uncompleted, and rumored item on your to-do list. You can set alarms to remind you when certain events will occur. Small tweaks to how songs affect time and the flow of boss battles give you deeper control of time itself, while the rearrangement of collectible items throughout dungeons and the overworld make Majora's Mask feel fresh for those coming back after 15 years.

"My preciousss..."

Majora's Mask is inarguably the weirdest Legend of Zelda game. Sometime shortly after the events of Ocarina of Time, our hero Link wanders into a country called Termina. Hyrule it is not: The ominously named region is home to an eerie cast of characters and hosts an inordinate number of strange happenings. An erratic mask salesman hoarding cursed objects? We've got one. Alien abductions? Frequent. Ghost hands in toilets and ghost giants throwing boulders and ghosts doing tai chi on huge mushrooms? More common that you'd like.

The strangest happening is the grimacing moon falling out of the sky. Link is given 72 hours to find Skull Kid, an impetuous young creature, and steal back an item of terrible power, the titular Majora's Mask. To do so, Link must liberate four spirits located in four temples scattered throughout the world. These spirits can help save the world, but for now, they have also fallen prey to the bizarre magic clouding Termina. He only has three days to do it, but with the help of his trusty magic ocarina, Link can rewind time for those three days and live them over and over like some Groundhog Day redux.

Time management is the name of the game here. Anytime during the 72-hour window, you can play the Song of Time to rewind back to dawn of the first day. Having this limit means you must allot yourself ample time to clear regional quests and complete dungeons. In each area, what you do in the surrounding area directly affects your access to the dungeon and side quests, so you'll need those full 72 hours. In one region the town is iced over, and defeating the dungeon boss is the only way to restore spring. In spring you have access to a handful of smaller missions that in turn reveal more major gains, like upping your sword power and finding your long-lost horse. Once, I completed this dungeon and then immediately rewound back to the first day...only to find it all frozen again. It's this kind of thing you need to be mindful of as you play Majora's Mask, and forces you to forgo leisurely exploration in favoring of beelining between quest points.

Like in most Legend of Zelda games, extensive travel across the continent and back is required to collect special items. These items range from a bigger bag to carry your bombs to a bow and arrows and everything in between. The traditional Zelda gear accumulation formula is present: help NPCs to gain helpful combat items, complete dungeons to get useful items like the aforementioned bow and fire arrows, and beat the dungeon boss to collect a key item.

But other than mystical weapons and keys to defeating the game's ultimate enemy--the power of Majora's Mask--you're also on the hunt for masks. Masks do many special things, and, more often than not, donning one can solve a difficult problem. A Blast Mask allows you to explode an enemy or rock wall without using bombs. The Great Fairy mask attracts stray fairies to you, making them easier to collect. Another mask teaches people to dance, another charms animals into parading around after you, and yet another lets you run faster and jump longer. Still more transform you into other Termina races. The Deku Mask turns you into a Deku Scrub and lets you utilize cannon-like flowers and glide through the air, while the Goron Mask grants you powerful punching abilities and the race's stony look. Masks grant you situational powers and are the key to navigating most puzzles. The variety and versatility make it hard to resist taking time to collect them all, especially when you know they'll make life in Termina easier.

Not quite the weirdest thing Link's ever done.

When you're not exploring the overworld, running fetch-quests for various townsfolk and mask hunting, you're in dungeons. Majora's Mask features four main dungeons and a handful of mini-dungeons where you can collect rare items like bigger wallets and mystical Zora eggs. Dungeons are the same as they've always been in Zelda: make your way through a labyrinthine, multi-level temple solving environment puzzles to get to the final boss. Defeating this final boss yields a health upgrade and liberates one of the four spirits that can help stop the moon from falling. Puzzles make up the meat of dungeon content, but you still spend an awful lot of time fighting.

Combat in Majora's Mask is simple. You use the left analog stick and face buttons to stab, slash, and parry, while the shoulder buttons help you block with your shield and lock on to enemies. The ability to lock on to enemies is helpful, as some opponents can crawl up onto the ceiling or leap long lengths, and keeping track of them becomes tricky.

Boss battles in Majora's Mask 3D have been substantially fixed, and while they feel more manageable than they did in the Nintendo 64 version, they aren't necessarily easier. These fights have been adjusted to prevent you from exploiting the boss's attack pattern, meaning that they won't always do the same thing with the same regularity in the same way. You need to knock bosses over and then attack their weak spots three times before you're victorious, but this time around, it's harder to sneak in cheap hits when they don't follow the same attack, rinse, and repeat formula. It makes these long fights feel new and interesting and makes success more satisfying. For example, the first dungeon boss can summon waves of smaller critters. The first time this happened, it was a handful of beetles. I expected him to go back to attacking me without his minions, but half a minute later, I had beetles and moths to contend with. Then he went back to attacking me solo until the end of the fight.

While bosses haven't been made easier, some other areas have been. There are more save points throughout the world, mercifully saving you from long stretches of lost progress in the event you fail. The Song of Soaring allows you to teleport to any save point, and now there are more of them to make navigation easier. Additionally, the Song of Double Time lets you fast forward to whatever hour you choose within a same-day window. In the original game, this song only let you fast-forward to dawn or dusk; in the 3DS version, you can teleport to any hour on the hour, allowing you to more carefully manage how and when you complete tasks. This also comes in handy when you just want to quickly wrap up a few side quests before rewinding to the first day and tackling a dungeon.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

Even smaller changes make Majora's Mask 3D more digestible in small quantities and make the puzzles feel newer for repeat players. Scattered throughout each dungeon are a dozen or so stray fairies that can be returned to the region's Great Fairy for combat upgrades. These stray fairy locations have been changed up from the original game, so if you think you know where all fairies are going in, you'll likely be hunting a little harder. Some exits put you into areas closer to where you need to go, eliminating running time. For example, after collecting beans underground, I was dumped outside a platform I needed rather than the front of the temple, eliminating a minute of wandering.

Google Calendar hasn't made it to Termina yet, but this will do.

But by far the best changes to Majora's Mask are the more detailed and comprehensive Bomber's Notebooks. These notebooks serve as your quest log, helping you keep track of where you should go and what you should be on the lookout for. The original Majora's Mask Notebooks were a little more cryptic and made you sweat out finding solutions a little more. Now, for the 3DS version, literally everything you need to know is there with a button press. The Notebooks keep track of rumors you hear from NPCs and gently suggest where you need to be to complete a task. Successful and failed tasks are also recorded, so if you mess something up on day three, you can rewind to day one and keep better track of how to fix it. These tiny tweaks make the game friendly in small doses. By giving players quick, efficient ways to tackle one sidequest or a mini-dungeon, they've ensured that they'll be comfortable playing the game in short bursts. Lunch breaks and morning commutes can now safely yield a fully completed Majora's Mask task.

The new Notebooks also keep track of the specific day and time that certain events occur and let you set alarms for them, so wherever you are in Termina, you'll know when you need to be back in Clocktown to catch a ghost or some extra cash. This is an amazing addition that makes housekeeping more manageable and lets you keep track of what items you get and when without having to take written notes yourself. Games with Majora's kind of time-management mechanics would do well to steal this gem of an idea.

In Majora's Mask, you have a set number of spaces to equip items and masks, and you're always swapping them around. Having the 3DS bottom screen show your gear and items at all times is an indispensable addition. You can fluidly explode a wall, attract a stray fairy, and then turn into a Deku Scrub and jump into a flower in a hot moment. It's convenient in every way that the original version was tedious. So many different items are needed at any given time, and having them all a tap away saves frustration and, more importantly, in-game time.

Best kept secret.

Majora's Mask 3D runs just fine on older 3DS models, but the experience is much more improved and cozy on the latest version, the New Nintendo 3DS. The additional tiny C-stick on the right side allows you to change the camera angle at will. This helps the most in boss fights, where both you and the boss are in constant motion, and it's often hard to keep track of where you both are. It also makes navigating large spaces while riding Epona much easier. In one quest, I had to ride around a wide expanse of farmland shooting aliens, and being able to shift where I was looking while riding at breakneck speed made fending them off a breeze.

If you're playing on the old 3DS, you have to lock Link in place and look around with the circle pad or use the gyroscope feature, which can get clunky. It's also frustrating for tasks that require you to move and look around quickly. Boss fights become equally annoying because lock-on targeting becomes the only way to keep tabs on the opposing monster. So while you can use your older 3DS with Majora's Mask 3D, I would highly recommend giving it a go on the newest handheld model.

The overall package for Majora's Mask 3D preserves all the weird delight of the original game while lowering the barrier of entry for new players. There's still a lot that's challenging about the puzzles and fights, but a few minor tweaks make your hard-won heart containers and masks feel that much more satisfying. The changes to how you can control and manage time mean the otherwise dense Majora's Mask is comfortable for shorter play sessions, making it a great fit for the handheld. It's evident that Nintendo put a lot of thought into updating this classic, which takes the game beyond a simple remake to become a new-old classic.
