Free of Charge - APB Reloaded

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 08 Mei 2013 | 23.37

@Truth_Hurts_U To be fair, there are some amazing players that continue to play the game and are so good that it gets harder and harder to discern a difference between actual hacking and pure skill. Just watch a few of the remaining livestreams on Twitch.tv and you can see just how insanely good these players can be.

Overall I agree, the community is easily one of the most toxic groups I have ever come across in gaming and it is a griefer's paradise no doubt. At the same time it definitely has one of the greatest character, vehicle and gear customizations I have ever seen in a game and think developers should be taking a page from APB when they design that area of the game.

EA extends FIFA licensing agreement to 2022

EA and FIFA have extended their long-running video game licensing agreement to 2022.

The licensing agreement grants EA the exclusive rights to develop games with the FIFA license, including titles based on the FIFA World Cup.

EA has been making FIFA games since 1993, and the series has become one of the publisher's most profitable global titles: EA announced last night that sales of FIFA 13 had reached 14.5 million copies.

Last month the publisher announced FIFA 14 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and "additional platforms."

""EA Sports released the first FIFA-branded soccer game in 1993, and 20 years later our partnership with FIFA continues to be very strong," said EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson.

"Our relationship with EA Sports is of high importance to FIFA," added FIFA secretary general Jérôme Valcke. "The FIFA videogames are a key experiential component in our work to communicate the FIFA brand and its values all over the world."

Blizzard disables Diablo III auction house after gold glitch pays out trillions

Blizzard has temporarily disabled the Diablo III auction house after the game's recent 1.0.8 patch triggered an exploit which saw some users disrupting the game's economy by generating trillions of gold.

"After the release of Patch 1.0.8 this morning," said Blizzard on its forums, "we found that some players were exploiting a bug that enabled them to duplicate gold through the Auction House. We're working on fixing the bug right now, and bringing the Auction Houses offline helps us troubleshoot in a more stable environment while preventing further exploiting."

A post on the Battle.net forums claims that one Diablo III player has amassed 371 trillion gold using the exploit.

NeoGAF user fastford58 provided an overview of the problem, saying that crafty users exploited the relationship between Diablo III's gold and real-money auction houses to rack up huge sums of in-game currency.

"It started with the new patch today. Blizzard dropped the gold floor from .25 cents a mil to .25 cents per 10 mil. Enterprising players then bought gems for real money and converted them to gold. People were making billions on this. But then! A gold dupe has just been discovered with some streamers duping TRILLIONS in gold by playing around with the 2 auction houses."

Many users on Battle.net have taken to the Battle.net forums to request that Blizzard rollback their servers to before the patch was launched, which would restore all characters to their pre-patch state and wipe away the economic disruption caused by the gold exploit.

Blizzard, however, says a rollback is not necessary. "We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region. We've been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections. While this is a time-consuming and very detailed process, we believe it's the most appropriate choice given the circumstances."

Patch 1.0.8 for Diablo III was announced in April, and was primarily designed to enhance the cooperative multiplayer aspects of the game. Blizzard says over one million people play Diablo III every day.

Diablo III's decision to incorporate an auction house has remained controversial throughout the game's lifespan. Speaking at GDC in March, former game director Jay Wilson said the auction house had negatively impacted the game.

The upcoming PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of Diablo III will not feature a real-money auction house.

EA pulls out of licensing deals with arms manufacturers

EA has turned its back on officially licensing the rights to firearms and and other weaponry in its action games, starting with this year's Battlefield 4.

The publisher intends to continue using branded and licensed guns without permission from arms manufacturers, arguing it has a constitutional right to free speech in using the trademarks. In an interview with Reuters, EA executive Frank Gibeau said "we're telling a story and we have a point of view," and that "a book doesn't pay for saying the word 'Colt,' for example."

EA spokesperson Jeff Brown added that "the action games we will release this year will not include licensed images of weapons."

In August 2012, EA was criticised for offering links to real-world weapons in association with its then-upcoming shooter Medal of Honor: Warfighter, citing that it was the "most authentic shooter" on the market. The publisher responded by removing all links to external arms vendors and a series of blog posts endorsing the products penned by producer Greg Goodrich.

The publisher's claim that it has the constitutional right to free speech is already being tested in the US court. In January 2013, Bell Helicopter issued EA a cease and desist for its unlicensed usage of helicopters--the AH-1Z Viper, the UH-1Y, and the V-22 Osprey--in Battlefield 3, which prompted EA to sue the helicopter manufacturer's parent company Textron citing the first amendment.

New BioWare and DICE games to be revealed at E3

New games from BioWare and DICE, among others, are just a month away from being revealed. During last night's post-earnings call, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said the company's next-generation plans will come into focus during the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.

"Regarding next-generation consoles, we are under a nondisclosure agreement with our platform partners. However, we're planning a full reveal at E3, including more next-generation titles in development for fiscal '14," Gibeau said (via Seeking Alpha).

"This will include breakthroughs in graphics and gameplay for some of our biggest franchises, including Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live and Need for Speed," he added. "We plan to unveil new titles from EA Sports, BioWare, and DICE, and a first look at some brand new games."

No further information about these titles was provided. BioWare is currently working on the next Mass Effect game, while DICE is developing an all-new Stars Wars title and possibly Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

As for EA Sports, the company took over the UFC brand last year, buying it from THQ for an undisclosed sum. Gibeau also revealed during the call that EA Sports has developed a next-generation game engine for its upcoming titles. It will be on display at E3 2013.

In addition, Respawn Entertainment is rumored to reveal its first game during E3 2013. This title is believed to be an Xbox-exclusive online-only multiplayer shooter, though no firm details have been announced thus far.

Lastly, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen talked up Battlefield 4 during the call. He said preorders for the game "look very strong," though specific figures compared to past titles were not divulged. Battlefield 4 launches this fall.

Fan creates Lego: Breaking Bad parody

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 01 Mei 2013 | 23.37

The decidedly mature Breaking Bad franchise and the for-kids Lego series have come together, albeit in a parody fashion.

Animator Brian Anderson has created a Lego: Breaking Bad parody that envisions a new Lego game based on AMC's hit TV show about a high school teacher who cooks and sells meth.

In the four-and-a-half-minute video (below), series protagonists Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are recreated in block form, with their escapades playing out with the humor associated with the Lego series of games.

"I have no affiliation with Traveller's Tales, Lego, or AMC. I'm just a huge fan of the stuff they make," Anderson explained. "But seriously, if they all got together and made this game, for real, I'd buy it and play the crap out of it."

Anderson explained that he chose not to actually show White and Pinkman cooking meth in their trailer over a fear of the video getting pulled down.

"I considered having little text pop-ups that would say 'Press A to add Methylamine, Press B to add Phenylacetone, etc.' but I was afraid that listing actual meth-making ingredients could get the video yanked," he said.

Lego: Marvel Super Heroes is the next entry in the series, due to launch this fall. It is the latest in Traveller's Tales' lucrative licensed series, following last year's Lego: Lord of the Rings.

The video below contains Breaking Bad spoilers.

Cyberpunk 2077 will have Tarantino vibe

What will separate Cyberpunk 2077 from other games is its "rock and roll" vibe similar to the films of Quentin Tarantino. That's according to lead developers at CD Projekt Red, who explained to IGN in a new interview that most cyberpunk games actually lack punk.

"There are lots of cyber games around, but there's not a lot of punk in those games," said game director Mateusz Kanik. "We want to put more punk into ours. We do not want to make a dark and hopeless world. We are not doing Blade Runner. It will be full of rock and roll."

"It's more like a Tarantino approach," creative director Sebastian Stepien added.

Tarantino's body of work includes his debut effort Reservoir Dogs, as well as Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, and last year's Django Unchained. The director is known for telling violent, nonlinear stories through his films.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City.

The game has been confirmed only for PC thus far and has no release date.

Molyneux teases Xbox 720 involvement as Curiosity draws to a close

There are now 50 layers left on 22 Cans' enigmatic Curiosity - what's inside the cube. As of 16:22 BST/08:22 PDT today, a countdown timer will now appear in the game saying what the predicted end date for the quirky long-running experiment actually is--and how close one person is from unlocking what creator Peter Molyneux calls its "life changing" contents.

22 Cans studio head Peter Molyneux admitted that the mobile title had sparked its fair share of controversy but that, currently, he expects the center of the cube to be reached around May 21--the day that Microsoft will unveil its next-generation successor to the Xbox 360.

"I thought six months was about the length of time that Curiosity should go on before it closed, and this is almost exactly the six month anniversary of the end of Curiosity," said Molyneux in an interview with GameSpot. "Bizarrely, as part of that controversy, is that the end of the cube--the last layer of the cube--might well be, I mean probably if you look at our analysis of probability, the same day that the next Xbox is announced. Which would be a bizarre twist of fate."

Curiosity launched on iOS in November 2012, with an Android version following shortly after. In April an update for the game introduced in-app purchases that would allow users to add or remove cubelets to the game's layers.

Are the two dates linked by more than coincidence? "There's an interesting opportunity, possibly, for me to… well, I can't say any more than that. There may be some words from me around that time. I'm not saying any more," said Molyneux, who worked at Microsoft between 2006 and 2012.

"I thought six months was about the length of time that Curiosity should go on before it closed." Reflecting on the six-month period that has seen the Curiosity app downloaded over five million times, Molyneux said that much of its success had been "completely unexpected."

"I never thought in a million years that it would be downloaded five million times," said Molyneux. "Political debates have raged on the surface of the cube, with people drawing the twin towers and other people drawing planes crashing into the twin towers, and other people writing 'God Save America'. All of that stuff is completely unexpected. This was supposed to be an experiment that maybe would interest a handful of thousands of people, not millions of people."

Molyneux added that one of the other things 22 Cans has learnt is about how much perceived anonymity can change the way people interact online. "Lots of people on Curiosity gave their Facebook details, but when they did they tended not to be so brave with what they drew and tapped. We had thousands of penises drawn on the cube, but not many of those penises came from people who left their Facebook details. There's a lot of learning to be done there."

"I've always tried to be very clear with Curiosity: it is an experiment." Speaking about Godus, the in-development god game from 22 Cans which raised £526,563 from Kickstarter in December 2012, Molyneux pondered how much connectivity with social networks it should have. "Seeing how many people were tempted to leave their details and how many people went anonymous is part of the experiment. A fascinating part. If you're making a game like Godus, which is all about self-expression and creativity in the land that you sculpt, you have to ask yourself if it's a good idea to require people to go on to Facebook."

"Quite clearly with Curiosity the answer would be no," Molyneux added, "although some apps require you, almost force you, to use your Facebook profile before you can dive in. There's some really interesting stuff about that."

"I've always tried to be very clear with Curiosity: it is an experiment. It is an experiment with tech, and getting servers right. We didn't do that terribly well at the start. But it's also an experiment in psychology, and the psychology of being anonymous, and the psychology of giving people these big, huge, insane objectives--like get to the center of the cube--and how that psychology plays into peoples' behavior."
