GTA 5 Christmas Gifts Extended Due to PSN and Xbox Live Outage

[UPDATE] You now have another chance to claim your free GTA V Christmas gifts, today and tomorrow. Happy New Year!

The original story is below.

Rockstar Games is extending Grand Theft Auto V's Christmas update because of the recent PlayStation Network and Xbox Live service issues, the developer has announced.

"Due to issues with PSN & XBL connectivity, we're extending the GTA Online Festive Surprise Christmas Day inventory gifts for the time being," Rockstar said via its official Twitter account. The developer didn't say until when its extending the holiday-themed update, so its safe to assume it'll be available until further notice.

Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live were down starting on Christmas Eve, due to an apparent denial-of-service (DDoS) attack by the same group that claimed responsibility for grounding Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley's flight back in August and other DDoS attacks.

Xbox Live services were restored earlier today, but PlayStation Network is still inaccessible to many players, sadly preventing many of those who got PlayStation 4s this Christmas from playing their new consoles.

Check GameSpot's ongoing coverage of PlayStation Network's status for the latest updates.

GTA Online's holiday-themed additions includes snowball fights, ugly Christmas sweaters, cookie-face masks, and lots more.

Kid Calls 911 Over PlayStation Network/Xbox Live Outage

The recent Christmas Day PlayStation Network and Xbox Live network outages caused headaches for people hoping to connect and play games. But one Florida teenager thought the downtime was enough of a problem to call 911 to see if authorities could do anything about it.

WPTV reports that a teenager from Palm Beach County called 911 dispatch, asking about the outages: "I was wondering, do you guys know anything about that?"

The dispatcher told the caller to check in with platforms holders instead. Authorities went on to tell the young man, "Last time I checked, that wasn't an emergency. Try going outside or read a book."

EA Responds To Origin Account Security Concerns

Electronic Arts' online store Origin has not suffered a breach of its account database, the Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher said this week after some users reported unauthorized purchases on their accounts.

"We found no indication at this point of a breach of our Origin account database," an EA representative told PCGamer. "Privacy and security of user account information are of the utmost importance to us. We encourage our players to use Origin user ID and passwords that are unique to their account, and to report any activity they feel may be unauthorized to EA customer support at help.ea.com."

Writing on Reddit earlier this week, some users reported suspicious behavior on their Origin accounts, including game purchases that they never made. EA confirmed to PCGamer on Tuesday that it was investigating the matter, though it's unclear how widespread the issues were.

It appears EA's customer support department is working with affected users to remedy fraudulent account activity. PCGamer also points out that Origin now has a two-step authorization system (similar to Steam's) that alerts you when your account is access on a new device.

In other Origin news, the store is holding a year-end sale that offers deep discounts on a huge number of games. The deals end January 6.

What Year Was The Best for Games?

During the last five days, we've been running a series of features looking at some of the best years in the history of video games. Our selected years--1993, 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2007--were chosen not only for the amount of outstanding games that were released within their calendar confines, but how important those games have subsequently become.

Now it's your chance to tell us your opinion. Which of those five years do you think is the best? Or have we completely gotten it wrong? If so, sound off in the comments below for what you think is the more deserving year.

Here's a recap of all of our Best Year in Gaming features:

Why 1993 Was the Best Year in Gaming

"Back in '93, arcades were still a pretty big deal, Jurassic Park confirmed that dinosaurs were real, and some of the most memorable franchises in video gaming were born. Console makers were racing to try and bring the arcade experience home with machines like the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar, and the Amiga CD32, but in the end, it was the experiences that mattered most. It's a lesson that still plays out today: it's not about what machine can push out the most pixels, it's about how good the games are."

Why 1996 Was the Best Year in Gaming

"In 1996, the industry landscape was forever altered with a handful of game-changing new franchises. It was a golden year for strong leading characters and equally strong new gameplay ideas, both from Japanese and Western studios. Icons that are now household names—including Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot--were born in 1996. It was a good year to be a Mario fan as well, with still-beloved favorites from two branches of the franchise making their debut. Not to mention this was the year the world got Pokémon, a series that would reach dizzying heights of popularity nearly two decades later."

Why 1998 Was the Best Year in Gaming

"1998 was a year of firsts. The first narrative-driven shooter. The first three-dimensional Legend of Zelda game. The first modern stealth simulator. The first Japanese role-playing game that would drive us to catch them all. The first game to emulate cinematic techniques and direction. And the first RPG from a developer that has now become the genre's leader."

Why 2004 Was the Best Year in Gaming

"The early years of video gaming were defined by invention; 2004, by contrast, was about redefinition and refinement. Few of the year's standouts burst with wholly new ideas or introduced new genres. Instead, they set standards by which similar games would be judged in the decade to follow, and in the process, established themselves as masterpieces in their own right. You might call 2004 the year of the sequel, given the many high-profile follow-ups that iterated on the games that preceded them, but the successors that defined the year were hardly retreads. Not to mention, of course, the jewels that launched entire series' of their own, yet still shine even within the shadow of the games that followed."

Why 2007 Was the Best Year in Gaming

"2007 defined the seventh generation of consoles. This was the year that developers finally got to grips with the powerful new hardware of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and delivered games that were bigger, brasher, and more spectacular than ever before. Enduring franchises like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, and Uncharted all made their debut in 2007, while Nintendo Wii owners were treated to one of the greatest 3D platformers ever made in the form of the sublime Super Mario Galaxy."

Vote now in the poll below. Voting closes at 8am PT on January 5, 2015, and we'll tell you the results shortly after.

GameStop Reveals Last-Minute Holiday Deals

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 17 Desember 2014 | 23.37

Still have more holiday shopping to do? If there's a gamer on your list (or if want something new for yourself), GameStop today announced a series of last-minute deals on games and hardware.

Beginning today, December 17, shoppers can pick up Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare for $40. The deal is good in-store and online through GameStop's website, and it applies to all console editions.

GameStop is also now offering Lords of the Fallen for $40 across Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Like the Advanced Warfare deal, the discount doesn't apply to the PC edition of the Dark Souls-esque role-playing game.

If you're in the market for a new Xbox console, GameStop also has a pretty good deal you may want to consider. Beginning December 19, GameStop will throw in a $50 gift card with all new Xbox One purchases, while people who buy a new Xbox 360--the 4 GB model--will get a $30 gift card.

The Xbox hardware deal is valid online only, and you'll need to order by December 22 to be guaranteed that your items will arrive by Christmas.

GameStop isn't the only place to score a good gaming deal today, as Microsoft has launched its Countdown to 2015 Xbox One/360 sale (and weekly deals), while Sony has rolled out week three of its Holiday 2014 sale for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita games.

Check back later today for GameSpot's regular Gaming Deals post, which should go up this afternoon.

Disney's Frozen Comes to LittleBigPlanet

Characters from Disney's Frozen, the highest grossing animated movie of all time, are coming to LittleBigPlanet. Sony has announced a "Frozen Costume Pack" for LittleBigPlanet, featuring costumes that can transform your SackPerson into Frozen characters such as Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff.

The Frozen character costumes are available individually for $2. Alternatively, you can pick up a $6 bundle that includes all Frozen costumes, as well as a bonus costume for the sun-loving snowman, Olaf. He's only available through the bundle--which was a smart move on Sony's behalf, no doubt.

And to help you create winter wonderlands fit for the ice queen herself, Sony has also released a free Winter Creator Kit that gives you all manner of "creative goodies" to help deck out your wintry worlds.

This isn't the first time Sony and Disney have teamed up for a Frozen gaming endeavor, as Sony offered a special edition PlayStation 4 in Japan featuring Frozen laser engravings.

In other LittleBigPlanet news, Sony has already revealed a handful of statistics around the recently released LittleBigPlanet 3. Among the findings is that PS4 is pacing well ahead of PS3 in terms of online players. Check out the infographic below for more.

GameSpot's LittleBigPlanet 3 review scored it a 7.

Magicka 2 Feels at Home on PS4 and is Better With Friends

Magicka 2 includes everything you love about the first Magicka: spells, waves of snarling enemies, and hilarious hijinks brought on by missteps and unforeseen foes. Nearly four years after the release of Magicka, the four-player mayhem is back. Like its predecessor, Magicka 2 will send you through various fantasy environments populated by nasties you can beat down with spells. As a tiny robed wizard, eight spells are available to you, but some can be combined for more creative combinations--for example, mixing a fire spell and a water spell will make steam.

According to publisher Paradox Interactive associate producer Peter Cornelius, the team refers to Magicka 2 as a "competitive co-op game." Multiplayer is definitely where Magicka 2 shines. Friendly fire is present, adding one more thing for you to think about as you face off against waves of enemies. These enemies will become more numerous and a tad more difficult with more players out on the battlefield, so as not to punish those who play alone. But again, having someone there to play with you on the couch or via online matchmaking encourages you to press on. It is competitive in the sense that you want to stay alive and maintain a high score, but at the same time you all need each other to survive.

You have a direct line of sight on a giant cave crab, but your friend is in the way. What do you do: shoot through him and kill him in the process, or wait for a clear shot? Sometimes you've got to go with the former, and it's entirely up to your teammates whether or not they'll grief you for the remainder of the game, pushing you off cliffs and smacking you with explosives out of nowhere. Conversely, you can wait for your friend to get out of the way and work together to find a way to take the crab down. One of you can distract him with spells while another sprays a nearby water wheel, which as it turns lowers a gate that will allow you both to make a getaway.

Magicka 2 feels at home on PlayStation 4, as the way controls have been mapped to the DualShock 4 feels natural. Switching between sets of spells with a trigger press allows for fluid wielding, while using the d-pad to resurrect friends and blast enemies with air is just a quick press away. It all feels very familiar to longtime Magicka fans, and yet the updated look of the game--the shiny new graphics certainly help--makes this sequel feel fresh.

DayZ Video Celebrates Game's First Birthday

As an ARMA II mod, DayZ has been around for years. But one year ago this week, Bohemia Interactive released the DayZ standalone. It's gone on to top the Steam sales chart, selling millions of copies.

But the game's success wasn't always guaranteed, key creative people explain in a new video released to celebrate the game's first birthday.

Check out the video above to hear directly from DayZ creator Dean "Rocket" Hall (who is leaving Bohemia at the end of the month to start a new company), as well as producer Brian Hicks and others.

Hicks explains that the true appeal of DayZ rests in its open-endedness.

"What makes DayZ really unique is it is effectively not as much a game world as it is a toolset for dynamic experiences," Hicks says. "People shape what the game is for them based upon their actions and how they play it. Every time you spawn in a new character, every time you join a fresh server, your experience will be different."

Though Hall is leaving Bohemia, that doesn't mean DayZ development is slowing down. Bohemia has named David Durcak the game's new project lead, and the developer has big plans for the game in 2015.

Bohemia published a new content roadmap for DayZ, following the one we saw last month. Notably, Bohemia is still aiming to have the DayZ console prototype ready in Q3 2015, while the game's full PC release remains scheduled for 2016. Below is the updated DayZ 2015 content roadmap.

First Quarter

  • Basic vehicles
  • Advanced loot distribution
  • New renderer
  • New Infected AI
  • Basic stealth system (infected and animals)
  • Diseases
  • Improved cooking and horticulture
  • Advanced anti-hack system (Dynamic BattlEye)

Second Quarter

  • Advanced vehicles (repair and modifications)
  • Advanced animals (life cycle, group behaviour)
  • Player statistics
  • New UI
  • Player stamina
  • Dynamic events
  • World containers
  • New physics system

Third Quarter

  • Traps
  • Barricading
  • Character life span + soft skills
  • Animal predators + birds
  • Aerial transport
  • Console prototype
  • Advanced communication

Fourth Quarter

  • Animal companions
  • Steam community integration
  • Construction (base building)
  • Beta version

Life is Strange - Trailer

@pongley @arcanitejedi @evil_m3nace I admit my comment was a little  harsh. I have nothing against adventure games. hell one of my fondest gaming memories was with the secret of monkey island and other Lucas Arts works.

But a developer that seems to have the need to cram 2 dozen "statements" from different gaming outlets in 2 minute trailer just to prove their game's worth doesn't strike me as confident in their vision or in their game.

Plus ''it is like gone home" remarks aren't really reassuring.

Watch New Trailer for Square Enix's Time-Traveler, Life is Strange

Square Enix today published a new trailer for Life is Strange, the intriguing-looking, time-travelling game from Remember Me developer Dontnod Entertainment. The trailer sets up a bit of the game's story, which follows a young woman with time-bending powers. Something violent and dramatic happens in the video, but with the ability to rewind time, the event can be undone.

In announcing Life is Strange during Gamescom in August, Square Enix teased, "With the power to rewind time, what would you change? And would it turn out to be a change for the better or worse?"

The publisher has also said that every action you take will kick off the butterfly effect, an idea that posits that even the smallest of changes can have dramatic and significant effects later on.

Not only will Life if Strange offer some interesting gameplay, but the game itself looks lovely. That's because every single texture in Life is Strange was hand drawn, Square Enix claims.

The trailer is really well done, and the song--"Obstacles" from Syd Matters--really ties it all together.

Life is Strange--which is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2015--will be released digitally using an episodic model beginning with episode one on January 30. Every new chapter will build and evolve on the choices you made in the past episode, Square Enix says.

Square Enix also confirmed pricing details for Life is Strange. There will be five episodes in all, which you can purchase individually for $5 each. Alternatively, you can buy all five for $20.

Uncharted 4 Images Highlight PS4's Power

Not only did Naughty Dog share the world premiere of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End gameplay during the PlayStation Experience last weekend, but the developer also gave fans a deep look into how the power of the PlayStation 4 has allowed the studio to significantly boost Nathan Drake's visual appearance.

During the panel, "Modeling Nathan Drake: Bringing an Iconic Character to PS4," Naughty Dog artists and modelers offered a behind-the-scenes look at how they built the new version of Drake. Uncharted fans will definitely want to watch the hour-long video.

As part of the presentation, the Naughty Dog staffers revealed a series of images of the Drake character model for Uncharted 4, and also some Uncharted 3 comparisons. Check out the image gallery above to see the nearly 20 images, and be sure to click each thumbnail to see a full-size version.

Overall, Naughty Dog says it was aiming for a "filmic, cinematic" look for Uncharted 4. As such, the studio has gone to great lengths to make Drake--and presumably other characters--look and act lifelike in the game.

Drake's character model in Uncharted 4 depicts a more aged version of the well-known treasure hunter. His face is bruised and he looks pained. The PlayStation Experience presentation was focused on technical advancements, and not much about the game's story. However, Naughty Dog said previously that Uncharted 4 will be a "more personal" story that dives into "what kind of effect this journey has on [Drake] and the people around him."

The Drake model is so detailed that you can see sweat on his forehead, stubble, and even chest hair. Naughty Dog also points out that Drake has 850 possible facial animations in Uncharted 4, compared to 120 in Uncharted 3.

Uncharted 4 launches in 2015 exclusively for PS4. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Latest Witcher 3 Delay Explained

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has spoken out to explain the open-world RPG's most recently delay, which sees the game pushed back three months from February 2015 to May 2015.

CD Projekt Red board member, Adam Kicinski, spoke with Polish financial journalists about the decision this week--after all, CDPR is a publicly traded company in Poland.

"Gamers took our decision very well," Kicinski said, as reported by Eurogamer. "[The] market is afraid of badly polished games on next-gen platforms."

It's been a challenging year for some new games, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Driveclub, and Assassin's Creed Unity, each of which have suffered through problematic launches. CDPR doesn't want the same to be true for The Witcher 3, so the studio is taking more time to iron out the bugs.

"We don't want to release the game with bugs that undermine the gameplay" -- Kicinski

"There's a lot of small errors though, because the game is huge," Kicinski explained. "It's the only reason behind the delay. We didn't assume it will be this big. Only after putting all the pieces together it turned out it's bigger than the two first put together."

"Let me remind you: it's open and not linear," he added. "We are just learning how to play it and we have to catch the little pieces. We know what to do, we just have to do it. We don't want to release the game with bugs that undermine the gameplay."

Kicinski also reiterated that the February 2015 release date for The Witcher 3, itself a pushback from the game's original fall 2014 release window, was too optimistic given the scope of the game. "We announced the release date very early and we're paying for it now," he said.

The Witcher 3's latest delay is particularly noteworthy, given the fact that CDPR management previously promised "no more delays" for the RPG.

It's not the only game to shift from 2014 to 2015, however. Others included Batman: Arkham Knight, The Order: 1886, Quantum Break, Dying Light, The Division, and Mad Max.

The new Witcher 3 release date is May 19, 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of The Witcher 3.

PlayStation Exec Talks PS4 Street Fighter 5 Exclusivity

PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has addressed the recent announcement that Capcom's upcoming fighting game Street Fighter V will be released exclusively on console for PlayStation 4.

Speaking today in London, Gara said he didn't have a hand in forging the deal with Capcom, but said he believes the Street Fighter franchise's "natural home" is on PlayStation.

"I wasn't involved, so how it came about I can't comment on, but I think it's another fantastic example of how our heritage provides some fantastic opportunities not just to reminisce but to look forward as well," Gara explained to IGN.

"Obviously it's a classic from earlier PlayStation days, but now it's being reintroduced for the PS4 era," he added. "It was a huge hit on PlayStation, so I guess you could say Street Fighter's natural home is on PlayStation. Now, I'm delighted that's going to happen again in this cycle."

Street Fighter V is also coming to PC, and cross-platform play will be supported. Capcom has not announced a release date for Street Fighter V nor has it confirmed the game's fighter roster yet.

In the wake of the exclusivity announcement, Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer spoke out about the news and vowed to make amends to Xbox fans.

Twitter Death Threats Against EA Exec "Not a Violation of Rules"

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore is a top executive at what has previously been voted the "Worst Company in America," so he's undoubtedly familiar with negative comments. But things went too far this week, when one Twitter user lobbed rape and death threats against him and his family, prompting Moore to report the abuse to Twitter.

Moore shared his side of the story last night, saying on Twitter that he reported the hateful messages to the social networking site. However, as you can see in the response below, Twitter investigated the matter but was unable to take any action because the abusing tweets didn't break any rules.

Below is a sampling of some of the messages Moore received from a Twitter user, who was reportedly angry about EA's FIFA franchise.

  • "hurry up and die old man ur ruining video games . The day u die is the day I throw a street party. REMEMBER THAT"
  • "remove handicap it's not a joke. Hope ur wife dies in a ditch u scum. Hurry up and die u old prick"
  • "u scum I hate u and everything related to u.. I hope u ur wife kids family all die then there's nothing left of u"
  • "hope your wife gets raped"

The user, whose Twitter bio states that Peter Moore is "the one person I want to see die," has since spoken out to say his comments represented protected free speech.

Twitter's official "Abusive Policy Behavior" states that users are not allowed to "make direct, specific threats of violence against others." The site also points out that users who believe they are in immediate danger should contact local law enforcement, in addition to reporting it to Twitter.

Just last week, Twitter announced new harassment reporting features that the company says it hopes will make Twitter a safer place.

Online abuse has made national headlines of late. The US Supreme Court is currently hearing arguments over whether or not online harassment should lead to serious penalties, including jail time. You can read more about the proceedings at GameSpot sister site CBS News.

Turn-Based Transformers Strategy Game Revealed

A new Transformers game is in the works, and it may not be what you expect. Hasbro and DeNA today announced Transformers: Battle Tactics, turn-based tactical combat game for iOS and Android devices. Scheduled to launch in 2015, Battle Tactics will be a free game, no doubt supported by in-app purchases.

Battle Tactics will offer up more than 75 classic Transformers characters, each with their own unique abilities, including Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, and Bumblebee. The game's unique art style (see the trailer above) was inspired by the Transformers: Generations Combiner Wars comic book series.

In addition to an "expansive" single-player mode, Battle Tactics will offer up player-vs-player matches and other, various in-game events. The game also supports leaderboards so you can compare your progress and achievements with friends.

Another notable element of Battle Tactics is that it allows players to create a team of Decepticons and Autobots, which has never happened before in a Transformers game, DeNA says.

Battle Tactics launches next year for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android devices. You can sign up to receive updates and earn in-game content at the title's newly launched website.
