Rejoice! Hearthstone's Undertaker is Nerfed at Last

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 28 Januari 2015 | 23.37

There is a special circle of hell reserved for people who open Hearthstone games with an Undertaker, a coin, and a one-mana deathrattle minion.

Such a dastardly combination gives the maddening mortician a 2 attack, 3 health buff by the end of turn one (not to mention its skull-and-bones-wearing associate to deal with too). As you probably know, this is because Undertaker starts at 1 attack, 2 health and gains 1/1 for every deathrattle card dropped on the board.

If you can't remove it straight away--and it's pretty hard at this sage--there's a fair chance that your opponent will drop another deathrattle card, pushing Taker to 3/4 by the end of turn two. The game is already, by this stage, creeping away from you.

Such devastating synergy, coupled with how frequently it occurs, led many players to expect that--surely--the card would be nerfed.

Oh, goody!

Well, when GameSpot spoke to the game's designer Ben Brode about the issue in December, he seemed open-minded about the possibility but was generally against it.

"Ah, well, we did add some cards to Goblins vs Gnomes that are specifically good against Deathrattle decks," he said at the time.

"But The Undertaker is one of those cards that feels really powerful when he's hurting you, but if you draw him late in the game he's pretty terrible. We were paying attention to how people were using him, and looked at how we were playing against him, but we didn't feel he's nerf-worthy. He is very powerful, but it wasn't past the line for us. I think it's worth noting that Kolento [professional player Alexander Malsh] recently won a pretty large tournament and didn't use Undertaker in any of his decks."

However, following a few more weeks of soul searching, Blizzard has implemented a nerf to the card that seems very fair. The starting stats and mana cost is the same, but henceforth the Undertaker won't buff health from deathrattles, only attack. This still makes it a useful card, but with 2 health its dominance will likely not stretch too far into the game. Two-mana removal is not hard to concoct.

The nerf will come into effect in the next update, Blizzard said. As a nice bonus for those who pin their early-game strategies on Undertakers and deathrattles, the golden version of Undertaker can be disenchanted for its full cost for a limited time once this balance change goes live.

Writing on the Hearthstone forums, Blizzard community manager Christina Sims added: "We will continue to make balance changes to Hearthstone when we feel they are necessary in order to increase the variety of cards seen at all levels of play, with the goal of making Hearthstone a more fun and interactive game for everyone."

Ready for Action!

Okay, so if you've read this far it's pretty likely that you love Hearthstone, so here's something awesome for you.

If Undertaker dwells at the badass end of the one-mana spectrum, then the Goldshire Footman surely exists on the opposite end. A wave of joy sweeps through players every time they see the 1/2 taunt drop onto the board, as it's quite possibly the best indicator that you're up against an inexperienced player.

Goldshire, of course, feels a little neglected by this, which is why one awesome player has decided to chronicle his thoughts and feelings with an unofficial Twitter feed.

An example of the fine work is below. Follow him here!

Apple's $350 Smartwatch Shipping In April

Apple has announced that its first wearable device, the Apple Watch, will start shipping in April. CEO Tim Cook announced the shipping window as part of the company's holiday quarter sales report.

"Development for Apple Watch is right on schedule," Cook said during a call with analysts and media, as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET.

When Apple originally announced the Apple Watch in September 2014, the company had only confirmed an "early 2015" release date for the device.

The base Apple Watch model will cost $350, though Apple will also offer a more expensive "Watch Edition" version (pictured above) that features an 18-karat gold casing and a display protected by sapphire crystal. An Apple Watch Sport model will also be available, though pricing has not been announced.

During the financial call this week, Cook said his expectations "are very high" for Apple Watch.

"I'm using it every day and love it and can't live without it," he said. "I see that we're making great progress on the development of it."

Regarding the third-party developer support for Apple Watch, Cook said that the number of outside studios making apps for the device is "impressive."

A variety of bands--six in all--will be available for the Apple Watch, including stainless steel and leather straps. These are interchangeable (using a proprietary strap design), meaning users won't be locked into one style or another.

The device has a built-in heart rate sensor and gyroscope, as well as haptic feedback. The Apple Watch can also determine the difference between a tap and a press, and features wireless, inductive charging. It also comes with support for Apple's personal digital assistant, Siri.

Apple Watches require an iPhone because the two devices have been designed to work together. However, users won't need to buy a new iPhone 6 to use the watch, as Apple Watches are also compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5c models.

2015's Need for Speed "Already Looking Spectacular," EA Says

After taking 2014 off, the core Need for Speed series is making a comeback this year with a brand new title from Ghost Games in Sweden. While Electronic Arts has yet to officially announce this game, we now know a little more about it, at least regarding how far along in development it is.

During a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that the game will launch this year, and teased that it is "already looking spectacular." Unfortunately, he didn't say anything more about the game.

2014 was the first year without a new, core Need for Speed title release in over a decade. In May 2014, EA confirmed that it would not launch new entry in the franchise until 2015 so that the project could have an "extended development window."

Ghost Games GM Marcus Nilsson said in May 2014: "We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We're going to give you the game you've been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time," he said.

Nilsson further boasted about the game at the time, describing it as "highly innovative" and an "experience built on a foundation we know you'll greatly look forward to."

In addition to the new title from Ghost Games, EA plans to release Need for Speed: No Limits, a free-to-play racing game for mobiles, later this year.

Apple Ships 1 Billion iOS Devices

Apple has now shipped more than 1 billion iOS devices, the technology giant has announced as part of its record-breaking earnings report for the holiday 2014 sales quarter.

Speaking with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company achieved the milestone--which covers total iPhone and iPad shipments--on November 22. The billionth iOS device shipped was a space-gray 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus, which Apple is keeping at its headquarters.

"One billion devices is an almost unfathomable milestone and we are all incredibly proud to be a part of it," Cook said during an earnings call, as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET.

Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones during the three-month holiday period, a new record for the company, which overall posted $18 billion in profit for the quarter, another all-time high. Cook also revealed that, on average, Apple sold more than 34,000 iPhones "every hour, 24 hours a day, every day of the quarter."

The latest versions of the iPhone, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, launched in September 2014. Cook said that the smaller iPhone 6 was the most popular model during the quarter.

Asked by an analyst if he thinks Apple can sustain the iPhone's incredible growth in future quarters, Cook said he is "very bullish" on the device's outlook. The executive went on to say that the iPhone 6 brought on more new Apple customers than any prior iPhone launch, and even led to the most instances of Android users jumping over to iPhone compared to the last three launches.

By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 2 is the best-selling home video game console of all time with more than 150 million units shipped to date.

PlayStation Vita Losing Some Apps Soon

The YouTube app for PS Vita

Sony announced Wednesday that it is ending support for a pair of PlayStation Vita apps.

The system's YouTube app will vanish from the PlayStation Store today, January 28, and will no longer be supported after April 20. Users can still watch YouTube videos on their PS Vita through the system's browser, complete with playlists and channels, however.

PS Vita's Maps app

The YouTube app for PS Vita was originally introduced in June 2012.

The other app getting kicked to the curb is Maps. All features of the app, and some features of the PS Vita's Near app will be disabled through a March 2015 software update, Sony explained.

Sony notes that the removal and disablement of the PS Vita's YouTube and Maps apps will not affect gameplay in any way.

The company did not provide any explanation for why it is removing the apps. More information about the closure of both apps is available through the links below.

First Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC Out Now--Adds Zombies, Guns, and John Malkovich

Activision and Sledgehammer Games have released the first expansion for last year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, introducing more maps and weapons, along with a zombies mode featuring celebrities such as John Malkovich and Bill Paxton.

The Havoc expansion is available today for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and--per Micosoft's exclusivity agreement with Activision--will be released for PlayStation consoles and PC later on. The DLC is included with the game's $50 expansion pass, or can be purchased by itself for $15.

Below is rundown of everything Havoc contains. Be sure to check out the image gallery at the bottom of this post for an even closer look at the add-on.

  • Four new multiplayer maps: Core, Urban, Sideshow, Drift.
  • Exo Zombies mode: This co-op mode sees player taking on the role of four Atlas Corporation employees played by celebrities John Malkovich, Bill Paxton, Rose McGowan, and John Bernthal as they fight against a "new breed" of zombies.
  • New weapons: the AE4 directed energy assault rifle and custom variant, the AE4 Widowmaker.

Havoc is the first of four planned expansions for Advanced Warfare. The other three are called Ascendance, Supremacy, and Reckoning. Activision has not yet announced details on these expansions, though you can be pretty sure they will add more maps, weapons, and zombies content.

Advanced Warfare was the top-selling game of 2014 in the United States, according to the NPD Group. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

Wii U Zelda Spinoff Hyrule Warriors Sells 1 Million

Hyrule Warriors, the Wii U Legend of Zelda spinoff from Nintendo and Koei Tecmo that blends Zelda with Dynasty Warriors, has shipped more than one million units worldwide since its launch last fall.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reported the figure this week, which Joystiq has since confirmed.

Koei Tecmo is marking the milestone by releasing a batch of new Hyrule Warriors wallpapers, which you can download from the game's website or view in the gallery below.

Nintendo and Koei Tecmo aren't finished supporting Hyrule Warriors just yet, as the game will introduce its latest expansion--the Majora's Mask Pack--on February 5. The $8 DLC includes two new characters--Tingle and Young Link--as well as a new Adventure Mode map and three extra costumes.

GameSpot gave Hyrule Warriors an 8/10 score. Reviewer Miguel Concepcion praised the game's balancing of Dynasty Warriors map management with Zelda-style objectives and said it delivered true Zelda fan service from beginning to end. You can read our full review here.

Check Out Dying Light's Destiny-Style Loot Cave

Following open-world Dying Light's release yesterday, fans have discovered that the game contains a reference to Destiny's Loot Caves, special areas players could visit to reap huge bounties of loot.

Reddit user ZachyWillz explains that Dying Light's own loot cave, which players must swim into, is located at the top right of the map. Once you're there, a message appears, saying: "Your destiny is to build your legend (and get loot)."

After this, ZachyWillz claims that infinitely spawning zombies spew forth from the caves. After you clear the undead, another message reportedly pops up that says, "Enough! Patch 1.0.2. has been released! Do more quests!"

Destiny's loot caves were something of a thorn in Bungie's side. After players discovered the first Destiny loot cave, Bungie was quick to remove the exploit--even if players quickly found even more.

Check out the video below to see Dying Light's loot cave.

Next Amiibo Wave Revealed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 14 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Nintendo on Wednesday made a pair of Amiibo-related reveals during its Nintendo Direct briefing, including details about the next wave of toys and the announcement of a "Super Mario Series."

First, the next wave of Amiibo toys, due out this spring, will include:

  • Robin
  • Lucina
  • Pac-Man
  • Wario
  • Ness
  • Charizard

The Super Mario Series of Amiibo, meanwhile, will include many of the same Super Smash Bros. Amiibo toys, but in new poses. Nintendo says that the characters Amiibo will be interchangeable, so a Super Smash Bros. Mario will interact with games in the same way as the new Super Mario Series Mario.

The full list of Super Mario Series Amiibo, coming March 20, will be:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Princess Peach Bowser
  • Yoshi
  • Toad

The newly announced Toad Amiibo will update functionality for Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Using the character will hide a pixelated Toad in each stage for you to find.

The Super Mario series will be compatible with the upcoming Mario Party 10. Rosalina and Luma, Donkey Kong, and Wario will also work with the party game. However, you'll need to erase a figure's Smash Data to use it with Mario Party.

New Nintendo 3DS Release Date Confirmed--Only XL Version Coming to US

The New Nintendo 3DS XL will ship in North America and across Europe on February 13, Nintendo announced on Wednesday.

Nintendo's enhanced handheld is available at $200 in the US in either black or red, while two special editions have also been announced.

Click on the images below for a closer look

However, there appears to be no existing plan to release the regular-sized, non-XL systems in North America. These smaller models, which come with the same hardware spec, are unique insofar as they support custom faceplates. Back in October, these smaller versions shipped alongside the New Nintendo 3DS XL in Japan, but Nintendo has not mentioned any plan to launch them in the US.

Europe will be getting the regular sized models, along with 12 custom face plates also available at launch. In the UK, the regular model will be available in black or white, while the XL comes in black or blue.

Meanwhile, two special launch units have been revealed for both North America and Europe. A Majora's Mask edition, which you can see in the video above, comes with the 3D reboot of the N64 classic pre-installed.

However, in the US the game will not come pre-installed.. Along with this, Nintendo also announced a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Edition that will come packaged with the game.

The Special Edition Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate 3DS

The New Nintendo 3DS comes with various hardware improvements over the original model, which first launched in March 2011. It features a small C-Stick next to its face buttons, which effectively works as a second analog stick.

Also added in are two new shoulder buttons--ZL and ZR--along with what Nintendo is calling "Super-Stable 3D," which will broaden the viewing field of the stereoscopic 3D.

Upgraded hardware will allow the system to run faster, while the in-built NFC technology will enable the use of Nintendo's amiibo figurines.

These systems will not come bundled with an AC adapter.

Metroid Prime Trilogy Poised for Wii U Re-Release

The acclaimed Metroid Prime Trilogy, which has become so sought-after by collectors that its pre-owned price on eBay has climbed above $100, will be re-released on Wii U on January 29.

Nintendo announced the digital re-release on Wednesday as part of a broader plan to offer downloadable versions of key Wii games on the Wii U. That begins now, with the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the eShop, followed on January 22 with Punch-Out.

In Europe, the release schedule and line up is similar, only that instead of Punch-Out, players will be offered Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Each title will retail for $20 (£18), though will be reduced to $10 (£9) on the week of their release. More Wii re-releases are expected to follow.

GameSpot's Metroid Prime review described it as "quite simply one of the best games ever made"

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of only seven games that GameSpot has awarded a 10/10 since it started reviewing games in 1996. Punch-Out was also received favourably, while GameSpot's Metroid Prime review said it was "not just one of the single most atmospheric games ever created, but it's also quite simply one of the best."

Meanwhile, Nintendo also announced on Wednesday that some Wii games will benefit from enhanced compatibility support on Wii U. Although all Wii games can be played on the Wii U, players need to enter into the system's emulator to play these. Nintendo is implementing a workaround whereby all that is required to play certain Wii games is that the disc is inserted.

In GameSpot's Year Two Wii U Review, its backward-compatibility function was cited as a major advantage.

The review wrote: "One should not underestimate the value presented here. There is no lost magic in games such as Wii Sports, or Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, or the Metroid Prime Trilogy (if you can still find it), or Zelda Twilight Princess. Nintendo has some of the most capable minds in the industry when it comes to creating content with long-term appeal. Furthermore, players can still access the Wii Shop channel and buy all its digital games, offering access to a vast library of retro content."

Tekken Director On Board for Wii U Exclusive

Nintendo has announced a new partnership with Bandai Namco, which is working on a brand new Wii U exclusive currently codenamed "Project Treasure."

A teaser trailer showed that the focus will be on disarming traps and collecting treasure while playing with friends. It will be free to download, though further details on the game are light at the moment, and the trailer is somewhat vague. We'll have that trailer for you soon.

However, Nintendo has confirmed that Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada is working on the project. That doesn't necessarily mean the game will be Tekken-related.

We'll have more information on Project Treasure as soon as it becomes available.

Watch this New Trailer for Wii U Exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles X

I never get hyped for games. It can only lead to disappointment. And you know, I've not had much trouble curbing my enthusiasm for games when they're in development. I'll buy them and I'll enjoy them usually from a position of neutrality. If it's good, then hurrah. If it's crap well I didn't expect anything anyway so I'm hardly disappointed.

And then there's this. A sequel to one of my favourite games ever and my favourite JRPG of all time. It's very difficult to stay neutral with this.

Pokemon Shuffle is Nintendo's Next Free-to-Play 3DS Game

Nintendo has revealed match-three puzzle game for 3DS, called Pokemon Shuffle, that will release on the handheld in February.

The game, available for free, is similar in style to the likes of Bejeweled and Candy Crush, though with gems replaced by faces of popular Pokemon. Players must line these up in rows of three for them to disappear. The twist on the match-three format is that a player will have a limited number of moves available to create a certain number of matches, meaning that in some cases thinking ahead is required with chain combos lined up.

Nintendo says that players "will be able to take advantage of their own Pokémon's type during gameplay".

It explains: "Players will also be able to raise the level of their Pokémon as they play, enabling them to deal even more damage. Some Pokémon can even Mega Evolve, just like those in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. Mega-Evolved Pokémon are able to remove many wild Pokémon from the Puzzle Area at a time."

Pokemon Shuffle will be available for free, with the game offering five play sessions. Once this is depleted, the play allocation is restored over time. However, players can pay to speed up this process.

Nintendo has not revealed how much it will charge for each replenishment of play sessions.

Take a Closer Look at This Gorgeous Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo saved a nice surprise for the end of its Nintendo Direct briefing today, revealing a special-edition New 3DS XL system focused on the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.

The system will go on sale February 13, the same date that the game and $200 New 3DS XL system are released in North America and Europe. Nintendo's Bill Trinen says the bundle represents "the definitive way to play what is arguably the most fascinating Zelda game ever made."

In Europe, the Majora's Mask 3D bundle will come with a pre-installed copy of the game, but gamers in North America will need to buy the title separately. Nintendo did not announce a price for the special-edition Majora's Mask New 3DS XL, but $200 is likely.

If you're looking for even more Majora's Mask 3D goodies, you may want to preorder at GameStop, which is giving away free Majora's Mask pins to people who preorder Codename S.T.E.A.M. In addition, you can also spend $50 on a special edition Majora's Mask 3D bundle that comes with a Skull Kid figurine.
