Watch Mike Tyson Fight Mike Tyson in Punch-Out!!

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 23.37

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night and faced off against himself in a match of classic boxing game Punch-Out!! on NES.

Watch the video above to see the real Tyson, playing as Little Mac, take on the virtual version of himself from the 1986 game. We won't spoil the end for you, but one of the Mike Tysons won.

Tyson previously admitted to being so bad at Punch-Out!! that he couldn't even beat Glass Joe, believed to be the easiest opponent in the game.

The former heavyweight champion Tyson was at the center of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, as well as 2000's Mike Tyson Boxing for the original PlayStation and 2002's Xbox and PlayStation 2 game Mike Tyson's Heavyweight Boxing.

As for Jimmy Fallon, the late night host/actor/comedian is a big fan of video games.

Battlefield 5 Delay Good for the Franchise, Analyst Says

Electronic Arts' decision to launch Battlefield 5 (or whatever comes after Battlefield Hardline) in 2016 instead of 2015 was a smart move for the overall health of the series. That's according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who said in a note to investors today that launching the game in 2016 will help the Battlefield series avoid franchise "fatigue."

If the new Battlefield game were to launch in 2015, it would mean EA would have released two major Battlefield titles in the year. Hardline is scheduled to launch on March 17, 2015.

No new Battlefield in fall 2015, but Star Wars: Battlefront will fill its place

In explaining the delay, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said waiting a year to launch the next Battlefield game will give players more time to enjoy Hardline.

"As a result of the extended services and content updates that we provide, it's clear that players want to experience the games we're delivering for longer periods of time," Wilson said on Tuesday. "Looking into next year, we will ensure that our players have enough time between releases to fully explore the depth and innovation in our shooter titles."

Although EA will not have a new Battlefield game out for next holiday, the publisher will have a major first-person shooter series launching then in the form of Star Wars: Battlefront. During a financial call on Tuesday, EA confirmed that this game will launch in holiday 2015, in the same window that J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters.

"Management has increased confidence in the potential success of this title, which also helps to explain their decision to delay Battlefield 5," Bhatia said. "We think the decision to move Battlefield 5 will optimize the potential for the Battlefield franchise (and avoid franchise fatigue), and also should result in a more consistent revenue/EPS growth pattern for EA."

EA has said previously that it doesn't want to annualize the series, similar to what Activision has done with Call of Duty.

EA Origin's Next Free Game Is From 1995

Electronic Arts is currently giving away copies of 1995 game Crusader: No Remorse as part of the "On the House" promotion for Origin. The game normally sells for $5, but you can get it free today.

EA's On the House games don't come with any strings attached, but there is no saying when the deal will expire, so you're encouraged to act quickly if you want to pick up a free copy.

Crusader: No Remorse was developed by Origin Systems and originally launched in August 1995. You play as a "Silencer," an elite enforcer who works for the World Economic Consortium, but later joins the rebellion. "Now, your former employers better watch their backs because you're coming after them with all the firepower at your command," reads a line from the game's description.

This is an old game, so your current computer shouldn't have any issue running it. But just in case you're wondering, here are the minimum system requirements:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Windows XP or Windows Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
  • 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended)
  • 2 GB HDD
  • Mouse, keyboard

EA launched the On the House promotion in March with Dead Space. Other past freebies have included Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Dragon Age: Origins, and Bejeweled 3, among others. EA says the goal of the On the House promotion is to show off Origin and "provide a great gaming experience" to players. The publisher also runs Game Time, a promotion where gamers can play titles, usually newer ones, for free for a period of time--often 48 hours.

Microsoft Has No Plans to Sell Standalone White Xbox One Controllers

Currently, the only way to get your hands on a white Xbox One controller is to buy the Sunset Overdrive bundle, and it doesn't sound like this is going to change anytime soon.

Asked on Twitter if Microsoft had any plans to offer the white Xbox One controllers outside of the bundle, executive Aaron Greenberg said: "Not planning white controllers at this time."

Greenberg's response leaves open the possibility that one day Microsoft will offer white Xbox One controllers, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that will happen anytime soon.

The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One controller

If you're in the market for a new Xbox One controller, your current options are standard black or your choice of a pair of camouflage variations. Microsoft will also sell a special Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One controller (the same one that's included with the system bundle).

By comparison, Sony offers DualShock 4 controllers for the PlayStation 4 in standard black, as well as white, red, blue, and camouflage.

If history is any indication, Microsoft will eventually offer Xbox One controllers in more colors and styles. After all, there are currently all manner of colors and variations of the Xbox 360 controller available to buy.

On Monday, Microsoft announced a $50 price cut for all Xbox One systems--including the various bundles. The price drop goes into effect on Sunday, November 2 and runs through January 2015. For more on the price drop news, check out GameSpot's editorial on the subject.

Feudal Japan Assassin's Creed Might Feel Too Familiar, Dev Says

According to Alex Hutchinson, who was the creative director on 2012's Assassin's Creed III, an Assassin's Creed game set in feudal Japan might feel too familiar. In an interview with Total Xbox, Hutchinson said the setting sets up well from a design perspective, but explained that the ninja/samurai vibe has already been well-established in other games and Ubisoft would rather reach out and do something altogether new.

"You could always do it, but the point I was trying to make was that in the broad strokes and scale of history, [feudal Japan is] a theme that's been well-mined in video games," Hutchinson said. "So, Assassin's Creed is one of those games that can take [lesser-known] time periods or corners of the world and make them cool, fun, new, and refreshing."

"Feudal Japan would work as an Assassin's game, for sure, but I feel like it would start to look like 'oh, have I played this?'" -- Alex Hutchinson

"Feudal Japan would work as an Assassin's game, for sure," he added. "But I feel like it would start to look like 'oh, have I played this?' You know what I mean--'oh, I've been a ninja before, I've been a samurai before.'"

Though it sounds like there are no plans for a core Assassin's Creed game set in feudal Japan, Ubisoft recently released iOS game Assassin's Creed Memories, which is set in that time period.

Asked where he would take the Assassin's Creed franchise if the decision were up to him, Hutchinson reiterated that the British Raj is high on his list. The top-requested settings, according to previous comments from Ubisoft, are feudal Japan, World War II, and ancient Egypt. November's Assassin's Creed Unity is set in Paris, while this year's other game, Assassin's Creed Rogue, takes place in North America during the Seven Years' War in the mid-18th century.

Hutchinson is now the creative director on Far Cry 4. The game ships in November, after which he plans to take a vacation and then get to work on a new, unannounced game.

Ubisoft said previously that, thanks to Assassin's Creed's fictional Animus technology, "the entire human history is our playground" for future games.

This 436-Page Super Mario World Movie Script "Sucks," Screenwriter Admits

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 22 Oktober 2014 | 23.37

When he was 19, Chronicle writer Max Landis wrote a script for a Super Mario World movie. He has now published that script, which he freely admits "sucks" for a multitude of reasons.

It's an epic, 436-page script featuring characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Daisy and many others that Landis describes as more of a "manifesto" than a movie. Its super-long length was one of the many problems with it. "There has never been a produced film in America with a length of 436 pages," he said.

Other issues that Landis admits to involve poor tone and pacing, dialogue that is "just actually corny or bad," and problems with coherency and action. "Looking back, there is nothing to elevate this above fan-fiction," he said.

Despite a raft of reasons why he said his Super Mario World script is terrible (he imagines you won't be able to finish it), Landis said he still sees some merit in it.

"In all honesty, I would love to play this script as an Uncharted-style new, grounded Mario Video-Game," he said. "I'd love to see art of certain scenes. But I can't imagine, literally cannot imagine that any of you who so ambitiously venture into this script will actually be able to finish it."

You can read the entire, 436-page Super Mario World script on Landis' website right now.

If you're looking for a Super Mario movie, you're stuck with 1993's famously terrible Super Mario Bros., which recently deceased lead actor Bob Hoskins described as the worst movie he ever worked on.

EA Scores Partial Victory in Lawsuit Over Battlefield 4 Woes

Electronic Arts has notched a partial victory in the ongoing lawsuit over the calamitous Battlefield 4 launch.

On Monday, a federal judge ruled against the shareholders (Ryan Kelly and Louis Mastro) who last year filed a class-action lawsuit against EA, claiming executives at the company made false claims in earnings calls and media interviews about the game's quality ahead of its disastrous launch.

As reported by Courthouse News, US District Judge Susan Illston ruled that pre-release comments about Battlefield 4 from EA CFO Blake Jorgensen and EA CEO Andrew Wilson amounted to nothing more than "puffery" and "corporate optimism."

Illston also struck down Kelly and Mastro's contention that EA acted intentionally or deliberately reckless regarding the pre-release state of Battlefield 4. She found that that "the complaint fails to adequately allege falsity and scienter for reasons articulated by defendants."

Kelly and Mastro say, however, that they relied on the EA executives' comments when deciding whether or not they should buy stock in the company. EA responded by showing that, in fact, five of the eight statements that Kelly and Mastro said they relied on were actually made after they purchased EA shares.

As a result, Illston ruled that Kelly and Mastro cannot pursue securities fraud claims against EA. The case isn't over just yet, though, as Illston said she will allow new lead plaintiffs to come forward. Kelly and Mastro must amend their case by November 3.

Battlefield's rocky launch did not hurt the game's commercial appeal, according to Jorgensen. However, the troubles at release "absolutely" resulted in a loss of player trust, EA has since admitted.

Nearly a year after launch, EA continues to support Battlefield 4. The game introduced a massive fall update earlier in October, while the game's Final Stand expansion is due out soon. For more on Battlefield 4, check out GameSpot's review and previous coverage.

GTA: San Andreas Re-Release Coming to Xbox 360, Achievement List Suggests

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas may soon be re-released for Xbox 360, a new set of Achievements suggests. Developer Rockstar Games has not announced a new version of the game for Xbox 360, but Xbox Achievements has posted a new list of achievements that seem to indicate a re-release is in the works.

In addition, the Xbox Originals version of San Andreas is oddly no longer available to download for Xbox 360--though it remains available to buy for PlayStation 3. On top of that, October 2014 marks the game's tenth anniversary, which would be a fitting time for such a re-release, if it were to happen.

San Andreas was released in October 2004 for PlayStation 2, though the game has since come to platforms such as Xbox, PC, Mac, and various mobile devices.

We have contacted Rockstar for comment, and will update this story with anything we hear back.

Grand Theft Auto V comes to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 18. The PC version is scheduled to launch in January 2015. The open-world game has already shipped more than 34 million copies.

Xbox One's Sunset Overdrive "Rewrites the Rules" for Shooters, Microsoft Says

Microsoft and Insomniac Games have released the launch trailer for upcoming Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive, which they say "rewrites the rules" for traditional shooters.

Sunset Overdrive launches October 28 only for Xbox One, and not PlayStation 4--even though it appears Sony borrowed the game's font for a recent PlayStation Network sale.

Microsoft and Insomniac Games have also kicked off a "Week of Explosions" to promote Sunset Overdrive in the lead-up to its release next week. They have partnered with various digital networks (SourceFed, SourceFedNERD, RatedRR, and The Vloggity) for the promotion, where entertainers will explode a variety of real-world, Sunset Overdrive-inspired objects.

Players can choose what they'd like to see get blown up for the Week of Explosions grand finale on October 28 by voting at this special website. The first 100,000 people who vote will receive a Sunset Overdrive "Granny's Revenge" in-game outfit.

It is described as such: "What's in the basket, Red Riding Hood? Oh, a fire-spewing shotgun? I think you'll make it to Granny's just fine. This ain't no fairy tale--this is Sunset Overdrive. So, slap on this outfit and trek into those woods."

You can stay up-to-date with the Sunset Overdrive Week of Explosions by following this YouTube channel.

Sunset Overdrive, which is published by Microsoft, will be accompanied at launch by a $400 Xbox One bundle that includes a white system (and matching white controller) and a copy of the game. This is notable because it will represent the first time Microsoft will publicly offer the Xbox One in a color other than black.

For more on Sunset Overdrive, check out GameSpot's previous coverage. You can also test-fire some of the game's over-the-top weapons through a special interactive website called Walter's Workshop.

Nintendo Seeks US Hardware Architect for "Future Platforms"

Nintendo has been on the search for a new console architect for the past two months, according to several online job listings, in what could mark the first step of a long process of building new hardware.

In August, the corporation listed on LinkedIn a vacancy for Lead Graphics Architect, of which one responsibility was cited as "devising strategies" for "future Nintendo gaming platforms." Then in October, having not found its candidate yet, the corporation republished that senior job vacancy on the recruitment website Taleo.

Though it is predictable that console manufacturers are continually looking for people who can help create future products, listings of such key roles tend to signal the beginning of long-term next-gen projects. In March 2011, Microsoft published a job listing for an Xbox hardware architect, some 32 months prior to the Xbox One's release.

Presently, there are no signs that Nintendo will release a new console any time soon. Prior to E3 2014, the company publicly denied rumors that it was poised to reveal a new machine.

When approached by GameSpot on the subject of the new job vacancies, the company declined to comment.

Nintendo's Mark Cerny?

American developer Mark Cerny was influential in the development of PlayStation 4

The platform holder's job listing will fill a role at Nintendo Technology Development, a Washington-based R&D subsidiary that builds various technologies for future platforms.

Though details of the Washington company are somewhat guarded, it is known that Nintendo Technology Development co-creates new hardware with the Kyoto-based Nintendo Integrated Research and Development. It is believed, though never confirmed, that the group was an influence in the development of Wii U.

Nintendo's job listing suggests it is specifically seeking lead graphics architect who can help build and integrate system-on-chip architecture--perhaps the clearest sign yet that the company is actively looking to build new hardware.

It also suggests, though doesn't outright confirm, that Nintendo wants more input from western developers for future platforms.

The listing reads: "The candidate is expected to have good architectural insights and the ability to apply that for setting future graphics direction for Nintendo."

How much influence this US architect has will be key to determining Nintendo's approach for future hardware.

Chief executive Satoru Iwata, when answering investor questions in January following the recent spate of disappointing financial results, outlined a need to broaden its knowledge base.

"In Japan, I can be my own antenna, but abroad that doesn't work," he said.

In 2008, rival corporation Sony hired the US-based developer, Mark Cerny, to be the PlayStation 4's system architect. As a result, the next-gen console was built for western audiences, and created with developers in mind, and appears to have caught on well with US and European audiences.

NHL 15 Xbox One/PS4 Gets Huge Update

EA Sports has released the third content update for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of NHL 15, introducing a raft of new features and functionality, as well as bug fixes and more.

The NHL 15 update, which is available today for Xbox One and PS4, includes the following (descriptions courtesy of EA Sports):

Online Team Play -- Play online with up to ten players, locked to a single position using real-world rosters. These matches will be 5v5 ranked with AI controlled goalies.

Be A GM Rookie Draft -- For the first time in the NHL franchise, you will be put on the clock and feel the pressure like a real NHL GM. As they do at the NHL Entry Draft, you have three minutes to make a draft pick. If the pressure is too much, you can also call timeouts to extend the amount of time you have to make a draft pick or potentially negotiate a trade. You can make trades at any time during the draft. The CPU will also propose trades to each other and the user throughout the course of the draft.

Presentation -- New New uniforms have been added for the following teams:

  • Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) 3rd jersey
  • Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) 3rd jersey
  • Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) 3rd jersey
  • Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) 3rd jersey
  • Red Deer Rebels (WHL) 3rd jersey
  • Sarnia Sting (OHL) 3rd jersey
  • Boisbriand-Blainville Armada (QMJHL) 3rd jersey

Gameplay

  • Improved penalty logic for goalie interference calls.
  • Improved goalie decision making when playing the puck outside of the crease.
  • Pass Assist sliders have been tuned so that they now have the desired effect depending on the user setting.
  • Fixed issue where strategy overlay would show when User Strategy Adjustment slider is turned up.
  • Fixed rare issue where players would enter an unusual animation state after being body checked during a poke check.

Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT)

  • Fixed rare crash issues that can occur when sending won auction item to your Collection.
  • Fixed hang during matchmaking search in Versus.
  • Users will now be able to change auction prices faster.
  • Users that lose connection from their opponent are returned to HUT.

Be A Pro:

  • Addressed shootout coach feedback overlay issue.

We reported in August that the current-gen versions of NHL 15--the franchise's debut on Microsoft and Sony's newest consoles--would not include certain content seen in the last-gen versions (not to mention previous entries in the series). When fans got their hands on the game early through EA Access, we learned even more was absent than EA Sports had indicated. This led to the company outlining its plans for post-release updates that would add in some of this content.

An NHL 15 patch released last month introduced features such as a Playoff mode, coach feedback in Be A Pro mode, and more. For more on NHL 15, check out GameSpot's review.

Xbox One Bundle Offers Assassin's Creed Unity and Black Flag for $399

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 15 Oktober 2014 | 23.37

In the lead-up to the holiday season, Microsoft today announced two new Assassin's Creed-themed Xbox One bundles. Through a partnership with Ubisoft, Microsoft will offer a $399 Xbox One bundle that includes a system and a copies of Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. A second bundle will sell for $499 and includes an Xbox One system (with Kinect and a copy of Dance Central Spotlight), as well as copies of both games featured in the other bundle.

Both Assassin's Creed bundles go on sale worldwide (except Japan) on Sunday, November 2. Though you can play Black Flag right out of the box, you'll need to wait until November 11 to play Unity, as that's when the game is released publicly.

These bundles pile on top of previously announced Xbox One bundles for games such as Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Notably, the Advanced Warfare bundle comes with a 1 TB hard drive, the biggest ever for any major video game console.

"Combined with our award-winning games line-up this holiday, it's an incredible time to play on Xbox One," Microsoft marketing executive Yusuf Mehdi said in a statement on the Xbox Wire. "Over the next two months, we look forward to celebrating with fans every week as we launch new games, new bundles, and a few surprises for Xbox One."

Xbox One's Killer Instinct Gets Graphics Upgrade to 900p

Free-to-play Xbox One fighting game Killer Instinct's second season is now available, delivering new features, customizations, and content for single-player and multiplayer. The second season will also look better than the first, as developer Iron Galaxy increased the resolution from 720p to 900p, according to Twitter comments from the studio's community manager.

As was the case for Killer Instinct's first season, players can download the game for free and play a free rotating character every week," Microsoft said in a post on the Xbox Wire. You can even play all of the game's modes--including online multiplayer matches--with the free character.

If you want more from Killer Instinct season two, you can buy characters individually for $5 each, beginning with TJ Combo and Maya, which are available today. You can also pay $20 to unlock the Combo Breaker Pack, which features eight fighters--you get TJ Combo and Maya right away, with the other six released thereafter on a monthly basis.

Third, you can also buy the Killer Instinct season two Ultra Edition for $40. It includes all eight fighters, 16 accessory sets, and 8 "exclusive" costumes designed by Kevin Bayliss, the art director for the original Killer Instinct arcade games. This bundle also includes a copy of Killer Instinct 2 Classic, a port of the 1996 arcade game that features Xbox Live multiplayer and 1000 Gamerscore to earn. Finally, Ultra Edition owners will receive access to new characters and customization items before they are released to everyone else.

The first four confirmed characters for Killer Instinct's second season are TJ Combo, Maya, Riptor, and Cinder. The second four were not named outright, but Microsoft teased that they include an "ancient Babylonian sorcerer, an avenging ghost, a battle-hardened war golem, and more." Can you guess who they are?

In addition to the new fighters, Killer Instinct season two introduces a new user interface, which should allow for faster access to characters, better statistic tracking, and a "new experience system [that] makes the entire experience of Killer Instinct even better."

What's more, Microsoft says the entire fighter roster for Killer Instinct's first season has been rebalanced for season two. The company adds that characters will now even have new techniques and abilities to use. Further still, Killer Instinct season two will feature an "enhanced combo system" that features a brand-new "aerial recapture" option that allows players to catch an opponent in the air and send them crashing back to the ground to continue their combo. "Juggling air attacks has been increased, but the addition of Air Breakers and Air Counter-Breakers mean that there's always two-way interaction in a combo for both players," Microsoft said.

Finally, Killer Instinct season two features a new progression system that will allow players to earn costumes, accessories, and other badges "faster than ever before." As part of the new system, individual characters will have levels in addition to their overall player level. "Every mode you play contributes to both character and player level, and 'Fight Challenges' help players rack up experience points (XP) every time they complete a rank," Microsoft said.

PS4 Could Get Ex-BioShock, Halo Dev's Survival Game

Now that The Flame in the Flood has reached its $150,000 Kickstarter funding goal, developer The Molasses Flood has announced some of the game's stretch goals, one of which is a PlayStation 4 version of the survival game. If funding reaches $300,000, the studio will bring the game to PS4, delivering this version sometime after the PC release in 2015.

The Molasses Flood, a Cambridge, Mass-based studio made up of former BioShock and Halo developers, did not announce plans to bring The Flame in the Flood to Xbox One or Wii U. However, the studio teased it has "more stretch goals in mind" if funding hits $350,000.

Currently, funding for The Flame in the Flood stands at $155,000. Other stretch goals include German, French, and Spanish localization ($175,000); raft customization ($200,000); Russian, Portuguese, and Polish localization ($225,000); and an Endless Mode ($250,000).

In The Flame in the Flood, which runs on the Unreal Engine 4, you'll travel by foot and by raft down a procedurally generated river in areas inspired real-life places like the Everglades, the Louisiana Bayou, and the Mississippi Delta. In order to stay alive (the game features permadeath), you'll need to seek out resources, craft tools, escape dangerous wildlife, and stay ahead of downpours of rain. "Your journey has an end. Will you survive long enough to reach it?" reads a line from the game's description.

The game also features original music from singer-songwriter Chuck Ragan. You can read more about The Flame in the Flood at its Kickstarter page and through our previous coverage.

Another Boston-based studio, Day For Night Games, is currently seeking funds for its upcoming PCgame, The Black Glove. Funding currently stands at close to $91,000 of its $550,000 target.

Custom-Made PS4 Laptop Will Cost You $1,400

From the enterprising modder who brought you the Xbox One "Xbook" comes a similar creation focused around Sony's PlayStation 4. Self-taught engineer Ed Zarick this week posted a video of what he calls the "PlayBook 4," which is essentially a PlayStation 4 laptop.

The PlayBook 4 (via Eurogamer) features the PS4's guts inside a 3D-printed and laser-cut plastic case. The screen is a 22" Vizio 1080p LED LCD display, which fits snugly inside the system's lid. It comes in multiple color configurations, and pricing is as follows:

  • PlayBook 4 -- $1395 (extra $50 for HDMI out)
  • PlayBook 4 (you provide a PS4) -- $1095
  • Shipping -- $75 flat rate for anywhere in the contiguous United States (international is extra).

To order a PlayBook 4, you'll need to pay a $750 nonrefundable deposit.

Zarick says it takes around 2-3 weeks to finish a unit. You can choose to have the system made in black or white, and you also have color options for accents and corners, including black, red, yellow, blue, green, copper, silver, grey, orange, white, purple, and pink.

Zarick adds that he can even do "full graphic customization" if you want, though this will cost extra. He also points out that you'll void your PS4 warranty by having your console modded in this way, but he includes his own 30-day warranty to fix any problems not related to user abuse. Finally, Zarick ensures potential buyers that the PS4 units featured in PlayBooks are not altered in a way that would get you banned on the PlayStation Network.

You can read more about the PlayBook 4 on Zarick's website.

Watch Civilization: Beyond Earth's Impressive Intro Cinematic

Ahead of the game's worldwide release on October 24, 2K Games today unveiled the intro cinematic for Civilization: Beyond Earth, which is called "The Chosen." As its name suggests, the trailer sets up the story for Beyond Earth, which involves people traveling ... beyond earth.

It's an impressively produced, if not somewhat depressing, video. But it certainly did its job of getting its hooks in me.

Beyond Earth was announced just six months ago during PAX East. The game marks the first time a Civilization game has fully explored mankind's future instead of playing in the past. Beyond Earth's science fiction setting will undoubtedly be familiar to fans of Firaxis' 1999 hit, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, as both share a similar, humans-on-an-alien-world premise.

For much more on Beyond Earth, be sure to check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Halo: Spartan Strike Announced, Doesn't Feature Microtransactions

Microsoft today announced Halo: Spartan Strike, a spiritual successor to 2013's Halo: Spartan Assault. Like the original, Spartan Strike is a top-down, twin-stick shooter.

The $6 game launches December 14 for Windows platforms (desktop, Surface, and Windows Phone) and one purchase gets you access to the game across all Windows systems. The game is also coming to Steam. What's more, unlike Spartan Assault, the new game does not feature any microtransactions. Everything in-game can be purchase via credits you unlock through gameplay.

Concerning story, Spartan Strike is set during the events of Halo 2, though that's the extent of the information provided in the game's announcement today on IGN.

Spartan Strike will feature achievements, rewards for Xbox One game Halo: The Master Chief Collection, weekly challenges, and leaderboards. Spartan Assault eventually came to Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but it is unclear if Spartan Strike will do the same.

Halo series developer 343 Industries is currently working on Spartan Strike. The studio is also behind upcoming games such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo 5: Guardians.

Ubisoft: We Thought About Making Far Cry 3.5

Prior to landing on the idea for Far Cry 4, Ubisoft designers considered a more "traditional" sequel to 2012's Far Cry 3, something that would have amounted to what producer Dan Hay calls Far Cry 3.5. This game would have expanded on Far Cry 3's story and locations, but Ubisoft needed less than a week to decide that this was not the right path to go down.

"We definitely had the option of making a 3.5, of making a choice to just stay in the same location with the same characters," Hay said in a post on the UbiBlog. "We talked about the idea of taking Jason's story and growing it, maybe figuring out a way to bring Vaas back. And very quickly we realized that it wasn't going to be a thing that we wanted to do. So we stopped that conversation and said, that's the end of the 3.5 conversation--which lasted probably about four days."

What separates Far Cry 4 from Far Cry 3, outside of its new story and setting, is its "we want it all" design, Hay says. This deliberate approach has resulted in a number of franchise-firsts, like the ability to ride elephants and fly.

"We like the fact that we're a little bit Wild West," Hay said. "We like the fact that somebody's going to be able to kick out an idea that people will think is way too much. And then somebody else goes, 'Maybe that's why you should do it. Maybe that's what makes sense.'"

Far Cry 4 launches on November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Ubisoft recently announced that it's targeting 1080p resolution for the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, though final figures have not yet been revealed. CoD: Advanced Warfare Dev Says "You've Never Played Call of Duty This Way Before"

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare represents such a major step forward for the brand that one of its key developers even says, "You've never played Call of Duty this way before." That quote comes from Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, who said during a recent Best Buy Google Hangout that having three years to develop Advanced Warfare meant the studio had more time than ever before for experimentation.

"I think that was really what that extra year gave us, the chance to break a few things," he said. "To maybe alienate a few ideas to bring Sledgehammer's take to Call of Duty. And maybe push boundaries further than people were comfortable and then pull it back if we went too far."

One of the marquee features of Advanced Warfare is the exosuit, which gives players a range of super-abilities that expand their range of motion in ways never before seen in the Call of Duty franchise. Though Advanced Warfare does push things forward with the exosuit, it will also still feel like Call of Duty at the end of the day, Condrey assured fans.

"It feels like Call of Duty and everything about that gun-on-gun action that you know and love; and high production values of campaign," he said. "But, you've never played Call of Duty this way before."

Advanced Warfare is the first Call of Duty game developed on Activision's new, three-year cycle for the juggernaut franchise. In announcing the new schedule earlier this year, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said this move will allow developers to have extra time to not only create new features to help push the brand forward, but also so they can spend more time polishing each game.

Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Preorders for the game, however, unlock on November 3 through the Day Zero Edition. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Massive Video Game Collection Hits eBay With Asking Price of $164,000

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 08 Oktober 2014 | 23.37

A new listing has appeared on auction site eBay for one of the biggest video game collections I can recall. eBay user reel.big.fish has launched an auction for a set that includes more than 5,700 games (featuring basically everything released by Nintendo between 1985-2000) and 50 systems, including every Nintendo 64 color variant.

The asking price is $164,000, and the seller is not looking to break up the auction. So far, no bids have been disclosed, though the eBay auction page shows that six people have made inquiries. The seller has 100 percent positive feedback.

Most of the games featured in the auction are in used condition and show signs of wear, though the seller notes that many are in fact in "excellent to mint condition," while some remain factory sealed. "I've always replaced lesser quality titles with higher quality titles as I received them," the seller said. "So you are getting my master set."

The auction includes mostly retro/classic games, though it also features newer systems such as the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and 3DS (but not Xbox One or PlayStation 4). It even includes ill-fated devices such as Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Virtual Boy.

A list of every game and system included in the auction is available here. You can also watch the video above to see the massive collection. The seller is hoping to ship to someone in the United States--due to the amount and weight of items being shipped.

She is expected to play video games alongside host Aaron Bleyaert and potentially even reveal some news about next year's game.

"Psst: Camilla might even reveal spoilers about the upcoming 'Tomb Raider' sequel," reads the description from a teaser video about her appearance on the "Twitch Twednesdays" show. Rise of the Tomb Raider was officially announced during E3 in June. At Gamescom in August, we learned that the adventure game will be released exclusively for Xbox 360 and Xbox One in holiday 2015, though it could also come to other platforms--like PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or PC--later on.

Former BioShock and Halo Designers Working on PC Survival Game With Permadeath

A team made up of former BioShock, Halo, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band designers have teamed up for a new PC and Mac game called The Flame in the Flood. The studio behind the project, Cambridge, Mass.-based The Molasses Flood, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game, asking for $150,000 to make the project a reality.

What's The Flame in the Flood all about? The developer describes it as a "a rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten post-societal America. Forage, craft, evade predators."

In the game, which runs on the Unreal Engine 4, you'll travel by foot and by raft down a procedurally generated river in areas inspired real-life places like the Everglades, the Louisiana Bayou, and the Mississippi Delta. In order to stay alive, you'll need to seek out resources, craft tools, escape dangerous wildlife, and stay ahead of downpours of rain. "Your journey has an end. Will you survive long enough to reach it?" reads a line from the game's description.

You play as Scout, a "loner wanderer, schooled in the art of wilderness survival." According to The Molasses Flood, she has "seen a bit of everything" and "knows how to deal with the challenges of staying alive in a land that isn't interested in helping."

Another key element of The Flame in the Flood is permadeath. "When you're done, you're done, and if you don't make it, you go back to the head of the river to try again," the studio says. You won't lose everything, however, if you die. Your dog, Aesop, will meet you when you respawn, carrying everything you obtained when you died. "A small mercy from an otherwise cruel fate," the developer says.

Music is also a big part of the The Flame and the Flood, as it features an original soundtrack by American singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan.

Pledging at least $20 gets you a digital copy of The Flame in the Flood, which is expected to launch sometime around July 2015. For more on the game, be sure to check out its Kickstarter page.

GTA 5 Digital PS4 Preorders Come With $300,000 Currency Bonus

Sony has announced a new preorder promotion for the PlayStation 4 version of Grand Theft Auto V that sweetens the deal for gamers looking for a digital copy of the open-world title.

According to the game's product page on Sony's website, anyone who preorders the digital version of GTA V for PS4 through PlayStation Network will receive $300,000 in bonus virtual currency for Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer mode for GTA V. This is in addition to the $1,000,000 currency bonus given to all players who preorder the game, regardless of platform or format.

The one stipulation for the promotion is that you'll need to preorder GTA V on PS4 by November 3 to receive the $300,000 bonus GTA Online cash injection.

Microsoft has not announced a similar preorder promotion for the Xbox One version of GTA V. It is possible that Sony's bonus cash deal for PS4 digital preorders is the special perk that the company teased back at E3 in June.

GTA V launches for PS4 and Xbox One on November 18, while the PC version will be released in January 2015. The new versions of the game feature a raft of improvements, including better visuals, expanded draw distances, and denser traffic. In addition, existing GTA Online characters from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will transfer to the new versions of the game, regardless of which platform you choose to upgrade to.

Become Batman With This Oculus Rift App

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have teamed up to recreate Batman's iconic Batcave in virtual reality for Oculus Rift and other similar devices. The VR experience will be based on the Batcave featured in the 1990s show, Batman: The Animated Series.

In addition to Oculus Rift, the Batcave VR experience will be supported on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR and future "light-field" displays.

The Batcave app is powered by technology created by visual effects studio Otoy Inc. The company says the tech will deliver a faithful recreation of the Batcave with "unprecedented" detail. Otoy is even working with Batman: The Animated Series producer Bruce Timm for the project.

"It's super-cool, eye-popping stuff, and fans are going to love it," Warner Bros. animation president Sam Register said in a statement."

Work on the Batcave VR app is already underway, with an initial release targeted for this winter through Otoy's ORBX viewer app. It is unclear when the Oculus Rift and Gear VR versions will be available.

The next Batman game is Batman: Arkham Knight, which launches in June 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Minecraft Movie Is "Large-Budget," Might Not Arrive Until 2018

The upcoming Minecraft movie from Harry Potter studio Warner Bros. is a "large-budget" production, but is still very much in the early days of development. In a new interview, Minecraft creator Mojang COO Vu Bui said the movie--which will be produced by The Lego Movie's Roy Lee--might not be released until 2017 or 2018. "I still have no idea," he said in an interview with The Guardian.

As for why Mojang decided to partner with Warner Bros. for the Minecraft movie, Bui said he got the impression that the company was looking to make a movie that respected the source material instead of one that made a quick buck off one of hottest brands in gaming.

"We were approached by so many studios, but after talking to Warner Bros, we decided that this are absolutely the team we want to work with," Bui said. "They respect the brand, respect the IP, and want to make something that is going to be awesome, not just capitalize on the success of the game."

Pressed for further details about the movie, such as if it will be live-action and if so, who might star in it, Bui deflected. "A movie takes years, especially a large-budget movie like this. It's still in the beginning stages, and there really isn't a clear picture yet of what this is going to be. Once there is, I'm sure we'll share more."

Bui was more forthcoming regarding the story--at least at a high level--that the Minecraft movie will tell. He made it clear that, just like the game, whatever narrative is decided on for the film will represent just one possibility. After all, part of Minecraft's success is the way it doesn't push gamers into one avenue or another. This freedom will be reflected in the movie.

"We don't want any story that we make, whether it's a movie or a book, to create some sort of 'this is the official Minecraft, this is how you play the game' thing," he said. "That would discourage all the players who don't play in that way. When coming up with a story [for the movie], we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft."

In September, Xbox company Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft franchise in a deal worth $2.5 billion. Mojang's three founders, including Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson, will leave the Swedish studio when the deal closes, which is expected to happen by the end of 2014.

The Minecraft film is one of many video game movies currently in development. Ubisoft has a total of six films in the pipeline, including movies based on Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. Meanwhile, Sony is making a Last of Us movie, Konami is moving forward on a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Blizzard Entertainment has its Warcraft movie, and an Angry Birds film is scheduled for 2016. On top of those, new movies based on Capcom franchises Resident Evil and Dead Rising are in the works.
